mod_jobgirl.jpegHere's another unique mod, sorry, not a Mac.  I'm just trying to get some ideas out there for you guys to think about for the '08 Great MacMod challenge.  Chery wood & cherry veneer make up the most of this case.  Those of you who roll your own will notice the woman on the side of the case, she's the J.O.B. rolling paper girl (but with a mouse here).

The all wood exterior really took me here, that and the woman on the side made out entirely out of inlaid holly, purpleheart, ebony and maple burl.  This really is an exquisite mod.

Roll your own mod.

moomod.jpgNope, that's not a typo, it's a case mod that goes by the name of moo cow moo.  It's  PC mod a few years ago, but it is a good example of getting creative with a mod.

In my mind I not only see a cow, but a whole farm made into mods.  The cow, sheep, horses, etc.  Judging by the size of the hard drive and the optical drive, it looks like a mac mini could easily mod into a cow this size.

Mod with mad sponosors

amd_phenom.jpgWouldn't it be great if you had a few sponsors for your mods?  Imagine what you could do with a free case, computer, and all the cool gadgets you can think of.  Now go check out Project : Phenom, sponsored by AMD.  Designed by NMPTECH, the first case modding service online, the Project : Phenom is the introductory PC for the AMD's newest chip, the Penom 2.6 9900.

While the mod is wicked if you are into chrome, the real gem here is the online store.  Check out NMPTECH's website and you can watch a few DIY and review videos, and order some slick parts.  Now if Apple would only give us some new MacPros & a few MacMini's so we could do something like this ...

mod_caseheatsink.jpgWhen modding a case you always have to be cautious of how hot it will get on the inside.  This guy figured it out and made the mod do the work for him.  Take the case off your computer and extend the heatsink, now keep on extending it, keep going, keep going ... almost there.  Good!

His entire computer is a heatsink.  This is defenitely a cool mod, but it must get hot.  The heatsink got up to 104ºF (40ºc), so it must get hot after a while in the room. There's plenty of surface area to disipate the heat, but it must get hot after a while and stay that way for a while.  A good mod for a winter time, not so hot in the summer.

Plenty of pix and how-to's and how not to's.

Full case heatsink mod.

Steampunk'd Mini
Thursday, 06 March 2008
steampunk_mini.pngThis is a really cool Mac Mini mod/hack, and it is pretty well documented.  Steampunk Workshop has lots of cool mods, all based off the Steampunk theme.  What is steampunk?  Remember the MacMod challenge winner for 2007?  That is a form of steampunk.  Basically imagine an analog version of anything you see today, based off of steam power.  Kinda like "Doc" from Back To The Future III.

Anyways.  Dave at Steampunkworkshop.com has some awesome mods.  One of his readers did a mod based on his instructions and it came out beautiful!  Marble based LCD with gorgeous details.  If you haven't seen it yet, take a look.  If you have seen it, take a look at some of his DIY's.
