Boot up your Mac from iPod |

Playlist Magazine suggests using an iPod as a backup bootable disk for your Mac. To do this, you need to set your iPod to run in disk mode, and then install OS X on it using the original installation disks. If you're willing to fork some money for extra bootable iPod features, Protogo ($135) can boot several versions of OS X from your iPod, as well as add various utilities. If you've already got a bootable disk, like DiskWarrior, free Dasboot can also do it.

This mod is a little obvious... simply take out your optical drive and double your hard drive space. XBench results show a fair increase in many tasks, although a decrease in some small-block reads, and of course a hit in battery life as well. Other caveats include his keyboard no longer fitting quite right and an increase in noise coming from the second drive, but all-in-all Eric seems happy with the experience, and says the systems seems more “snappy."

If you have a MacBook Pro, you know upgrading the HD isn't exactly a walk in the park. Besides voiding your warranty, it's almost like minor surgery. If you need a bigger HD so you can have a larger partition for Windows/Linux, this may come in handy. ExtremeTech.com has an excellent step by step process in getting it done.
