Steampunk'd Mini
Thursday, 06 March 2008
steampunk_mini.pngThis is a really cool Mac Mini mod/hack, and it is pretty well documented.  Steampunk Workshop has lots of cool mods, all based off the Steampunk theme.  What is steampunk?  Remember the MacMod challenge winner for 2007?  That is a form of steampunk.  Basically imagine an analog version of anything you see today, based off of steam power.  Kinda like "Doc" from Back To The Future III.

Anyways.  Dave at Steampunkworkshop.com has some awesome mods.  One of his readers did a mod based on his instructions and it came out beautiful!  Marble based LCD with gorgeous details.  If you haven't seen it yet, take a look.  If you have seen it, take a look at some of his DIY's.

Mario & Luigi new home
Wednesday, 27 February 2008
iphone-supermariobrothers.pngThis was posted early in the month, but I'm not sure how much play it got so I wanted to pass it on to everyone.  ZodTTD is looking for beta testers of the Super Nintendo emulation on the iPhone and iPod Touch.  Game play was said to be satisfactory and they are testing audio now.

If you love Mario & Luigi and want to be a beta tester, head on over now and sign up.  They also have a free video streaming site for the iPhone and iPod Touch.  So if you've got an iPhone or iPod Touch, this is defenitely a site to keep an eye on.

Try playing it and see if the theme song doesn't haunt you for days.

Useless Unklian
Tuesday, 26 February 2008
mouse-twinfurnace.jpgThere is a person that goes by Unklian in the UK, and he likes "useless things" and cats.  Really. That's his title to his webpage at http://www.unklian.co.uk , "useless stuff".  Taking a closer look you can actually find some kinda cool stuff.  He has done two extreme mods to mice ( both fashioned after a furnace), and converted a car to a backward Trike, and refinished a 6-slice toaster.

I would say it is not a useless site, his stuff is interesting to look at and somewhat inspiring.  I've always liked wood working, and Unklian combines the beauty of wood into the functionality of technology.  He takes plenty of pictures and gives some good advice as to how he does his mods.  Check it out, it's a small site so you can go through it quickly.

The Prophecy Is Fulfilled, iToilet Lives.
Thursday, 21 February 2008
itoilet.jpgThe iToilet.  Long fabled to exist the bathroom of the Yetti and the Jackalope has been discovered by YouTube members FEDEX & VALERIO.  Looks like the first high quality toilet mod that I've seen.  Take a look and think of it next time you have to run to the restroom.

Sit Down and do your business.

Mac mini mod creator Hideo Takano meets MacMod
Wednesday, 20 February 2008
mini-lego.jpgWhile searching the internet for interesting news items, we occassionaly come across a cool mod that we haven't seen before.  What we found in Hideo Takano from Japan blows all expectation away.  He runs the MacMod Lab (no affilliation with this site) and is a modder extraordinaire.  Unfortunately he doesn't speak English, and I don't speak Japanese.  But still I was able to get some questions answered about his mods, please forgive the poor paraphrasing of the translations.

MacMod : What do you like about modding?
Hideo : Who doesn't like new designs?

MacMod : What is the inspiration for your mods?
Hideo : There are many things that inspire the mods.  Idle moments in life, looking through magazines, gossip, news and other things.

MacMod : What is your favorite mod to date?
Hideo : The CubeG5 is my favorite, it is also the hardest since I am never satisfied with it.

MacMod : Do you sell your mods or keep them?
Hideo : In order to stay away from copyright issues, I do not sell them.

MacMod : Do you use Macs only?
Hideo : Not just macs, almost anything you want.  Macs, PC's, game consoles, mobile phones, etc.

MacMod : What plans do you have for future mods?
Hideo : I have many, one of them is a hot air induced toaster.  Another would be do with a Wii remote.  I have a deep fondness for the Mac Mini so I want to reproduce the form alot.  A blog for the Mac Mini Pro is currently in production.

MacMod : What materials do you use?
Hideo : I use all kinds of material, mainly metal and plastic.  ABS resin takes some time to get formed.

MacMod : Do you have any tips for modders in America?
Note : This is the translation as it came across.  I can't figure it out but maybe somebody else can.
Hideo : In Japan than the United States has many modders, and the film's characters and games based on the diorama or irritant and I, people, culture and tips to be a lot. If you have the opportunity to talk to everyone, and I want to touch it.

If anybody knows Japanese and wouldn't mind translating, please email me.  I'll gladly repost his response with a better translation.

How to cook an iPod
Tuesday, 19 February 2008
ipod_flaming.pngToday we are going to review how to turn a first gen iPod into incendiaría la iPod (iPod on fire).

Step 1 : Get a perfectly good first gen iPod.

Step 2 : Get a torch.

Step 3 : Light torch.

Step 4 : Light iPod with torch.

And you to can make incendiaría la iPod just like youtube user tomicles.  My favorite moment comes in at 1:45 mark, when the iPod sheds it's last tear and you can see the flame retardants actually working.  This thing was on fire and it went out.  Don't forget, for a proper incendiaría la iPod you must cook both sides.

24th Anniversary MacMini
Tuesday, 12 February 2008
fmod-512kosx.jpgHere's a mac mod that might have slipped through the cracks.  Looks like it is a fully functional MacMini running OS X, but housed inside a 24th Anniversary 512K Mac.  While the description doesn't go into much detail about the how to, it is an interesting sight to see the 9" BW all in one runnning OS X.  The unique part of the mod was making the original keyboard, mouse & floppy drive work with the Mini.  The one down side, no arrow keys.  Go figure!

Powerbook to Desktop Mod
Written by Jacob Thomason
Sunday, 06 January 2008
cover.jpgRichard Hunt sent us his sweet mod and we have finally gotten around to posting this thing up for everyone's enjoyment.  He has taken an older powerbook and fitted it into a sleek new casemod.  This is by far one of the best laptop > desktop conversions that I have seen.  Wonderful work!

You can check out the mod in the archive on MacMod.
