Firewire pwns Windows
Tuesday, 04 March 2008
pwn3d.pngThere is a new problem with dual booting, firewire.  Microsoft was notified in 2006 about a way to take complete control over a Windows machine if you attached a Linux machine to it via firewire.  How hard is it?  It is possible to neutralize a windows machine in seconds, and the program just got released to the public.

While this does require you to have access to the firewire port, if you sit down in a computer lab that dual boots, this wouldn't be a problem.  Since Microsoft doesn't consider this a security risk, they aren't going to patch it.  They've had two years to fix it, and they didn't.  They consider it a "feature".  Lab admins everywhere beware.

DoD Building Darth Vader
Wednesday, 27 February 2008
prosthetics2009.jpgOkay, so we all know the Star Wars story.  Both Anakin and Luke get their arms shopped off by a Sith Lord.  They both then get these awesome prosthetics.  A thing of a galaxy far far away?  Not anymore.  Our department of defense plans to have Star Wars like prosthetics by 2009.

The amazing technology is being brought to us by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).  Never heard of them?  Dude, take a look.  They are the military's high-risk, high-pay off technology group.  Scanning through their website probably put me on some homeland security list, but it is pretty cool to see how our tax dollars are being spent (the Crusher is a hybrid manless vehicle, capable of carrying 8,000 lbs without impeading it's mobility).

Rise Lord Vader, your arm is ready.

The Crusher, what a great name.

Have PS3. Will Cook.
Tuesday, 26 February 2008
ps3-grill.jpegWhen technology breaks your first impulse is to either fix it or toss it (recycling of course).  But that doesn't have to be the case.  YouTube user Rayishu shows us that even if you have a $600 game console, it doesn't have to be a game console.  You can rip out the insides and turn it into your own personal grill.

This begs the question, "What can a Mac do in a kitchen?"  Really, it has fans, power, the G3 & G4 towers have solid hinges.  I bet it would make a really nice fruit drier.

Thanks, but I prefer To-Furkey.

5GB for your taking
Sunday, 24 February 2008
xdrive_show.jpgAOL has a cool service, Xdrive.  They basically hold 5GB of info on a remote server for you.  In the past you had to use a Windows App or a Safari Web browser to get to it, but now they make it easier.  XDrive Desktop Lite was released today to give you an application that allows you to upload via a native OS X application.  If you want a little bit of off-site storage, check this out.

The site (xdrive.com) is run by AOL and all you need is an AOL screen name, no membership is required.  It is powered by Adobe AIR (also launched today).  This is fresh meat here, I wouldn't store anything sensitive on it yet.  Two new products being released at the same time scream security leaks to me.  But, if you want to have some pictures backed up or a copy of your memoirs stored off-site.  This freebie is worht looking into.  Best part, it's free.  Worst part, it's AOL.

Forget Blu-Ray, Try HERCULES
Monday, 18 February 2008
herculeslaser.jpgOkay, so the Blu-Ray smashing HD-DVD was the big news this week.  But when you talk lasers (be it red, green or blue), there is no laser like HERCULES.  This massive laser broke the world, and posssible the universe record for most intense laser today.  The laser was fired at the University of Michigan, and was only a 1.3-micron speck (about 100th the diameter of a human hair).  But get this, it carried 300 times the capacity of the entire U.S. electric grid (300 terrawatts of power for you uber-geeks out there).

So what on earth can we do with a laser this powerful?  Any ideas?

Prepare the corn for popin'.

Update your M$ Ofice.
Sunday, 17 February 2008
entourage.pngThe Microsoft Office 2004 update (11.4) seems to be an important update.  It patches some wholes in their system and it also boasts improved reliability of Entourage to an Exchange server.

Yippie.

Why can't Microsoft just make a Mac email client that works as well with an exchange server as Outlook does with the exchange server?  They are already getting the money from exchange server, do they really need the extra few dollars from the OS?

Good article at itwire.com.

Not a Mac, but it is R2
Thursday, 14 February 2008
r2d2.jpgWhile it is not a Mac, it is a cool Mod.  Very detailed, and it's Star Wars.  Down side it is all in Spanish.

Click on the lightsaber to get the menu.  Inicio = Beginning, Juegos = games (most don't work), Mod R2D2 is obvious, and Construccion is the construction of the mod.  Inside the videos are some links to YouTube videos of the droid in motion.  Yes that's right.  This mod is not only a fully functional computer, it is also a remote controlled droid.

Thursday, 14 February 2008
ichatpro.pngIf you use iChat, but your desktop real estate is more than a downtown studio, take a look at iChatPro.  It is a simple mod brought to you by Infinise Design.  The buttons on bottom are gone, and the entire window is slimmed dwon.

if you like iChat, but want to trim the fat off it's GUI, then give iChatPro a try.  Best of all, it's a free mod.
