Forget Blu-Ray, Try HERCULES
Monday, 18 February 2008
herculeslaser.jpgOkay, so the Blu-Ray smashing HD-DVD was the big news this week.  But when you talk lasers (be it red, green or blue), there is no laser like HERCULES.  This massive laser broke the world, and posssible the universe record for most intense laser today.  The laser was fired at the University of Michigan, and was only a 1.3-micron speck (about 100th the diameter of a human hair).  But get this, it carried 300 times the capacity of the entire U.S. electric grid (300 terrawatts of power for you uber-geeks out there).

So what on earth can we do with a laser this powerful?  Any ideas?

Update your M$ Ofice.
Sunday, 17 February 2008
entourage.pngThe Microsoft Office 2004 update (11.4) seems to be an important update.  It patches some wholes in their system and it also boasts improved reliability of Entourage to an Exchange server.

Yippie.

Why can't Microsoft just make a Mac email client that works as well with an exchange server as Outlook does with the exchange server?  They are already getting the money from exchange server, do they really need the extra few dollars from the OS?

Good article at itwire.com.

Not a Mac, but it is R2
Thursday, 14 February 2008
r2d2.jpgWhile it is not a Mac, it is a cool Mod.  Very detailed, and it's Star Wars.  Down side it is all in Spanish.

Click on the lightsaber to get the menu.  Inicio = Beginning, Juegos = games (most don't work), Mod R2D2 is obvious, and Construccion is the construction of the mod.  Inside the videos are some links to YouTube videos of the droid in motion.  Yes that's right.  This mod is not only a fully functional computer, it is also a remote controlled droid.

Put your iChat on a diet
Thursday, 14 February 2008
ichatpro.pngIf you use iChat, but your desktop real estate is more than a downtown studio, take a look at iChatPro.  It is a simple mod brought to you by Infinise Design.  The buttons on bottom are gone, and the entire window is slimmed dwon.

if you like iChat, but want to trim the fat off it's GUI, then give iChatPro a try.  Best of all, it's a free mod.

Unboxing latest Apple, 20 years late.
Thursday, 14 February 2008
appleiic.jpgSo what happens when a geek meets ebay?  Bad things, but not in this case.  A mac enthusiast (Flickr user dansays ) found a vintage IIC and had to have it.  Not because the  IIc was his first computer, but because it was unopened!  While the Flickr gallery does not state a price, an eBay search shows that it sold for roughly $2,550.00 (compare with the original market price of $1299).

Take a look and remember yesteryear.

Unbox the beast.

10.5.2 breaks Linotype FX
Tuesday, 12 February 2008
logo_linotype.gifIn case you haven't heard, the 10.5.2 update will break your system if you are using LinoType's Font Explorer.  LinoType has released a new version today to correct the problem (talk about fast), but make sure you update LinoType before you update to 10.5.2.

What, you don't use Font Explorer?  What, don't you like free stuff?  Give it a whirl and see what all the hype is about.

nasa_logo.gif What is the NHMUG?  NASA's very own Mac User Group!

It seems the The NASA Headquarters Macintosh Users Group, promotes the use of Macintosh computers in NASA. You have to be an employee of NASA or one of its contracotrs to join. But I'll bet there is a modder or two in the membership somewhwere.

Hard Drives... Here to Stay? What about SSD?
Written by Jacob Thomason

sata_hd.jpgPopular Mechanics has put together a great article on the Hard Drive and it's place in our lives. While, I don't agree that the HD will remain the primary method of storage for the average user, there will remain a place for HD's for quite some time due to their large/cheap storage properties. What are your thoughts?
