DIY document scanner via iPhone
Written by Chris Tangora

other-iphone-docscan.jpgIf you need to digitize important documents, you generally need to get a scanner to get good results.  No longer, if you have an iPhone and are half-way decent with your tools.  Over at Ponko.com they have plans for building an iPhone document scanner.  Positioned ideally for reading the documents, and keeping the camera/iPhone steady as the picture is taken.

Granted the contraption is two to three times larger than a regular document scanner, it's about more than just size and space.  This is about style and utilitarianism.

Dell makes a Modder's Laptop

other-dell-mini9.jpgLooks like Dell is getting smart and making their PC's take aparts available online.  The Dell Inspiron 9100's service manual has been posted to Dell's European Documentation site.  The take apart has plenty of pictures and how to's for taking apart the tiny device and is well documented with cautions, notices and notes.

Expect to see the 9100 in a lot more PC mods because it is so easy to upgrade and change the parts on.

Lenovo requires NDA for Windows return
Written by Chris Tangora
Tuesday, 02 September 2008
Just a little haha for the day.  Lenovo was having some issues with a Czech Linux user who didn't want the OEM Windows Vista they installed.  Mr. Kamil Páral went into a lengthy discussion with Lenovo and finally got them to agree to refund the cost of Windows (about $140).  The only catch was that Kamil had to sign a NDA to get it.  He decided not to and posted the transactions with Lenovo to abcLinux.cz instead.  He eventually got the money back, but it was from abcLinux instead of Lenovo.

Interesting how difficult it is to move away from Windows.  You have to sign a NDA just to not have Windows.

Mac'in Some Money - 2008-0901
Written by Chris Tangora
Monday, 01 September 2008
com-macys_redstar.jpgThe Labor Day specials are all over the malls this weekend and today, so I'm bringing you a Labor Day special on the Mac'in Some Money items.  This Labor Day special comes to you from Macy's.  Macy's Systems & Technology in New York is hiring for a Macintosh Desktop Technical Support Associate for Macy's Home Store.

If you love shopping this is the job for you. As a Macy's associate you get 20% discounts on almost all items, plus for the more practical-minded you get a 100% company-paid pension plan.  They offer individual and group insurance policies as well as the standard vacation/PTO.  There are annual prizes for innovation and outstanding performance where you could win an additional $5000 or $2000 every year.

This position requires you to maintain 100+ Macs with direct support for CS3, Office & Lotus Notes. You'll have to keep track of hardware and software and a log of support issues.  If this sounds good to you, head over to macysjobs.com and search in NY for "Mac" to see the job listing.

PS2 glowing case mod
Written by Chris Tangora

other-ps2-casemod-blue.jpgSince I mentioned a Wii mod earlier in the week, figured I'd throw out one for the PlayStation 2 owners also.  This one is a little more hands-on than the software mod for the Wii, but the results are pretty nice looking.

Ben999_ has some great documentation on what you'll need and how to do it.  While the final pictures are a bit lacking, the "how to" documentation is top notch.  It should be noted that not all Playstation 2's can do this mod; version 1 & 2 of the PS2 will not work, and the later version you have the better chance of it working.

Windows Magazine switches to iPhone
Written by Chris Tangora
Wednesday, 27 August 2008
apple-iphone-3g.pngIn a surprising move a Windows Mobile magazine has stopped publication and is switching to Apple products.  The publication "SmartPhone & PocketPC" has suspended publication, and has announced a quarterly publication (for print and online) named "Smartphone magazine's iPhone Life".  While they probably won't switch their offices to the Mac platform, they may have to get a Mac or two in there to talk about the Mac side of iPhones.  The move is reported to be due to a lack of advertising interest for the Windows Mobile platform and the high interest in iPhone development.  This should not be confused with the actual sales of Windows Mobile, which had over 20 million sales in the last fiscal year.

The real meat of the story lies in the App store for the iPhone.  While the Windows Mobile market has to worry about distribution and updating, the iPhone market doesn't.  All that money that goes into packaging, distribution and update services are already in place, thanks to Apple.  So the money that is needed for advertising can be used for advertising, instead of the back end services.

product-wii.jpgWhile not a Mac mod, the Wii DVD mod is a nice mod in that it is only a software mod.  The mod is brought to you by Hack Mii, a site dedicated to the hacking of the Wii.

By running the DVDX installer you install the libdi DVD library, then you can use mplayer to watch your DVDs via the Wii.

If you have a Wii, check out the article on HackMii.com for all the details.

Hacking your doorbell
Written by Chris Tangora
Sunday, 24 August 2008
other-arduino-doorbell.jpgI talked about the Arduino back in May, and I recently saw a cool application of it, to hack your doorbell and report it back to your Mac.  Roo Reynolds has taken an Arduino board and hacked his doorbell to report back to Twitter every time it is pushed.  A few people have done this already, so if you are interested in making your house an online star with its own Twitter feed, follow what Nick and Roo have done.

From Gisvold's Blog (Where Vikings still go abroad, and use Macs to surf the net)

NOTE : I realize that these projects are a few months old.  But they are still cool.
