other-wallpaper-kernelpanic.jpgWe all love our Mac's wallpapers.  It's probably one of the first things that a modder will touch on their Mac.  Over at hongkiat.com they have what they consider the top 60 Mac wallpapers.  I gotta agree for the most part, most of these are pretty suit wallpapers.  Head on over now before their traffic gets to bad and grab some of your favorites.

The links on the page will take you different sites, with their own assortments of Apple wallpapers.  I found some cool ones by clicking on the links to the other sites like the ones on Kepa's Flikr pages or hamsher's selection at devianart .

iPhone with no contract
Written by Chris Tangora

other-iphoneterms-att.png I've been thinking about the iPhone lately.  Thinking of moving up from the iPod Touch to the iPhone, but I am just having a hard time with the service contract.  So I figured that I should go and learn more about this thing that I dislike so much.  Over at the AT&T website they have the service agreement for the iPhone hidden away, follow this link to get it iPhone Terms at AT&T site.  I found something that might just turn me into an iPhone Service Terms lover.

I'm going to pull a Tarantino here for effect.  I hope you enjoy it.

"All other charges apply. Some dealers impose additional fees."  ... thats where they get you.

"equipment may not be returned"   ... sweet.  Just what I wanted.  An iPhone with no contract.

"early termination fee will be waived,"  ... thank goodness.  $175 extra for the phone would suck.

"Service may be canceled after 14 days but within 30 days and" ... Two weeks with a contract, I can live with that.

Has anyone tried returning an iPhone?  Any ideas as to what the "other charges" might be?

UPDATE :
For those of you who don't like that style here it is straight from the Service Agreement ...

"Service may be cancelled after 14 days but within 30 days and early termination fee will be waived, equipment may not be returned.  All other charges apply.  Some dealers impose additional fees."

Virtualize your PDFs without Adobe
Written by Chris Tangora

other-pdficon.jpgHere's a simple little mod to make a virtual PDF printer using Apple's built-in PostScript to PDF function.  Over at codepoetry.net is a sweet little application called CUPS-PDF.  Written for almost any UNIX OS, the Mac version comes in a simple installer and creates a virtual PDF printer.

This is already possible if you have Adobe Acrobat Professional installed, but if you want to avoid paying the money for a PDF printer, then this is you key.  The printer shows up as a standard printer after holding down the option key when creating a new printer.  Choose the generic postscript color print driver and you're set.  While you could do something very similar by printing a PS to a file then converting it with Quartz, this is an all-in-one package that automatically creates a folder on the desktop with your new PDF in it.  It also allows you to print directly, rather than select the Save as PDF every time you want to save a print job as a PDF.

Imitation OS X on Linux
Written by Chris Tangora

other-linosx.png  While OS X and Linux are both based on UNIX, they each have their own look and feel.  Often times you will see one imitate the other, but now there is a way to make Linux (Gnome in particular) imitate the OS X Tiger look and feel.  Lauri Taimila's website, taimila.com, covers how to make the imitation work.

From the background to the Dock, the Menu Bar and effects, Lauri has done a good job documenting how to make a Gnome look like a Tiger.  If you have a spare box laying around or are running a Gnome based Linux, this would be a fun thing to try.  For more information head over to taimila.com and read his column, Linux desktop imitating OSX.

A new keyboard or good prank
Written by Chris Tangora

other-dvorakkeyboard.jpgThis could be considered a simple mod, or a really good April Fool's Day trick to play on someone.  The Dvorak simplified keyboard is a slightly altered version of the standards qwerty keyboard.  Flickr user sjwalsh384 has pictures showing how he took off the keys on his MacBook and rearranged them to the Dvorak style.  the Dvorak style of keyboard is supposed to be easier on heavy typers.  The Mac has supported the Dvorak style for years, all you have to do is go to the International preference pane and select the Dvorak style keyboard (with a DV instead of an American flag).

I plan on switching my keyboard around after seeing this and seeing how I do after a week or two.  I've been typing on a qwerty keyboard style for the past 25+ years and I don't know how easy it will be to re-learn the keys.  Expect a lot shorter articles until I get the hang of it.  Does anybody else type on a Dvorak style keypad?

V1 CPU cooler a work of art
Written by Chris Tangora

other-thermaltake-cpuv1.jpgThermaltake's V1 CPU cooler is pretty cool looking.  Made to cool any Intel Core2 or almost any AMD processor in style.  While it might not fit into some smaller or mid-sized cases, I think it was intended for moders who make their own cases or people with really big cases.  Roughly 6" x 6" x 4", it is a bit smaller than two MacMini's standing upright back to back.other-thermaltake-cpuv1-led.jpg

This is a nice component to see.  Priced at $60 it won't break you bank.  Some people say that it looks like an alien lung or something, I think that it is a great combination of form and function.  Plus when you have a LED light on the fan it just looks even cooler.

redrive makes hard drives green

other-fabrik-simpletech-redrive-top.jpgConsumers are pushing for more environmentally friendly products all the time.  From the organic groceries in your local store to the hybrid cars on the road.  Even in the computing world things are going green and Fabrik has announced their latest entry to the green market with the redrive.

Under their consumer product brand of Simple Tech , Fabrik has announced redrive, a USB external hard drive that is made from a bamboo and aluminum frame.  The frame itself helps keep the drive cooler, reducing the energy needed for the fans.  Simple Tech has worked out a way to get USB 2 to respond better to file transfers, they've named it Turbo USB.  This add on feature allows the device to achieve speeds 25% faster than standard USB 2 (not tested; this is from their site).  The Turbo USB is a Windows only feature, but it is supposed to be coming to the Mac soon.  Without the Turbo USB feature you can still use it on the Mac, but you only get standard USB 1 or USB 2 speeds.

Priced at $160 for a 500GB drive with 2GB of online backup, it looks like a total package, as long as you don't need the FireWire connection.  Keep an eye out for Simple Tech and when the Mac driver gets released, I would suggest grabbing this, green and fast.  You can't go wrong.
