Keep your MacBooks running cool

prod-moshi-zefyr.jpgHere's another great product for your portable Macs.  This time it is from Moshi, purveyors of electronics fashion.  Moshi has a fan that can be attached to the 13" MacBook or the MacBook Air to help keep the temperature down.  The fan is designed to work off the side USB ports, and it allows you to plug an additional USB device in through the back side of it's USB port.

Test results done by Moshi show that the Zefyr will keep both the MacBook and the MacBook Air about 9º F cooler than the same model without the Zefyr attached.  The design is nice, with the aluminum cast heat sink elevating the back side a bit for better ergonomics.  In the wake of reports about the MacBook Air overheating and causing system failures, this might be a nice buy for those of us who make their living running their laptops at 100%.

Music Video Staged on Mac OS X

again_and_again.jpgTalk about originality, The Bird and The Bee's new song "Again and Again" has been put together with the stage being Mac OS X.  The producer, Dennis Liu, must have really spent some time putting this together, and I am sure matching the beat up to the different frames wasn't exactly a walk in the park, per se.  Very well done, I recommend having a look.

12 to 16 hours MacBook Air power
Written by Chris Tangora
Monday, 12 May 2008
com-quickertec.pngOne of the biggest complaints about the MacBook Air when it was released was the non-removable battery (amongst other complaints about quality, firewire & USB ports).  Until today you were stuck with what Apple gave you, but no more.  Quicker Tec, Inc. has released the MacBook Air External Battery Charger to give MBA users an additional 6 to 10 hours of use.

Quicker Tec's strong point is wireless technology, but they have worked with MacBooks & MacBook Pro's to extended their battery lives.  Now they have an external battery charger that allows the MacBook Air to charge when not plugged into a wall socket.  There are no pictures of the device published yet, but it works like this.  You attach a modified magsafe adapter ($25 to mod yours or $100 for a new one) from the 5.5" x 5.5" x .6" battery charger to the MacBook Air.  The battery charger keeps the battery charged while it is in use, and uses the external charger as the battery until it is depleted.  Then the internal battery will take over.  Another benefit is the recharge time, the MBA's stock battery recharges in 4 hours.  Quicker Tec's MacBook Air External Battery Charger recharges the MacBook Air in 3 hours.

From the sounds of it this will be a must have if you have a Mac Book Air.  The additional $300 for the charger and $25 to $100 for the modified magsafe shouldn't be a big dent out of your pocket if you've already forked over the money for the MacBook Air.  The real question will be how well it will look next to the MacBook Air.

Easiest way to upgrade to 802.11n

prod-owc-80211nusb.jpgFor all of us who are stuck on 802.11 g (or even worse, b), there is an easy upgrade solution.  Newer Technologies' Max Power allows you to turn an USB 2 port into an 802.11n connection.  Their website claims USB 1.1 compatibility, but who would want to go that slow?)

Relatively inexpensive, ($53) and available from OWC (macsales.com) this wireless upgrade is fully OS X compatible.  If you don't want the USB stick jutting out of your Mac, you can also use the base that comes with it.  This is really handy if you want to position it for best reception or just want to keep it in a spot that won't get banged up (I've lost a few USB sticks by smashing them off the front of a G5).

System Requirements : Any Mac with available USB port & OS X (10.3.9 or greater).

Take a look at OWC for more info.

Free Virtualization from Sun

prod-sun-virtualbox.pngWhile VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop both do a great job, there is one draw back they both have, they cost money.  What is a person to do who is on a tight budget, but wants to have a virtual machine?  Answer, Sun's xVM VirtualBox.

Sun has developed a virtualization that it is dishing out for free, yes free.  It might not have all the bells and whistles of the paid versions, but you can't beat a free app.

Free NBC shows to the iPhone
Written by Chris Tangora
Thursday, 08 May 2008
news-iphone-nbcshows.pngWhile NBC has been threatening to pull it's content off of iTunes, it appears that they do like Apple products.  As of last night www.nbc.com would allow iPhone users to download/view some of their top TV programs with limited commercial interruption.  The only catch was you had to watch it in a few segments.  For example the last few episodes of The Office & 30 Rock came in four parts each, with only the last 5 or 10 seconds of each segment being an advertisement.

While it is available to the iPhone users now, you can also hack into the system by using Safari or another browser to emulate the iPhone browser.  You can get the episodes, but they are at iPhone size.  Looking at the past history of NBC and Apple I don't think that NBC is doing this as a favor to Apple, but rather as a way to attract their target market.

Log onto www.nbc.com on your iPhone browser to see.

Free wifi courtesy of AT & T
Written by Chris Tangora

mod-safar-developer.pngAT & T has siezed control of the wifi market for many popular hot spots (Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, etc).  They are also offering free internet at said hot spots for their favorite customers (iPhone users).  Don't have an iPhone?  Don't worry.  There is a really simple hack that works (at least at the time of writing this).

To get free interenet at the AT & T mobile hotspots set your browser to be "Safari Mobile".  You'll have to enable the developer feature to emulate a different browser, but it is easy in Safari.  Simply go to Safari's preferences and go all the way over to ADVANCED.  On the bottom enable the developer menu to be showin the menu bar. Now go to the developer menu item and change your user agent to be Mobile Safari 1.1.3.

And there's your free wifi!

Put your name in space
Written by Chris Tangora
Thursday, 24 April 2008
product-yournameinspace.jpgEver want to see your name among the stars?  Now you can.  An aerospace initiative from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Georgia Tech (GT) is putting a satellite into space and they are selling spaces on the outside.  For anywhere from $35 to $250 you can get your name, company logo or image sent into space.

For the $35 to $225 range you can get pictures of it before launch or have it visible while in space.  If you go for the $250 range you can get the space hardware returned to you.  This would be an awesome addition to a space themed mod, talk about unique!
