If you are running a jail-broken iPhone, do not download the Penguin Panic game. It is a trojan horse for PCs. Originally found by security firm Sophos, the virus only affects Windows OS's. The actual iPhone and Mac users are not effected by this Trojan.
If you run Windows and a jail-broken iPhone, beware. But if you are legit with the iPhone, you don't need to worry about this, or if you are running a Mac (either pure Mac or Hacked Mac).

3G iPhone barcode exposed |

Ever wonder how Apple can keep track of all the iPhones out there without an easily accessible area for a barcode to put a serial number? Well, wonder no more. Using night vision on a standard camcorder, Australian Whirlpool forum member fsjk85 spotted the serial/IMEI info on the left side of the iPhone.
The barcode is a DataMatrix 2D style barcode. If you have an advanced barcode reader you can probably read it, but then why not just get the info from your phone instead? But who knows, maybe there are some other secret stuff inside of it, we'll just have to wait and see if any one can read it or crack it (if it is proprietary).

Microsoft switches ad campaign, again! |

At thsi point, I'm about to start an advertising/marketing company and try to get Microsoft as my client. For a second time Microsoft has taken their advertising campaign and completely switched it (from ValleyWag via MacRumors). The first campaign was the Mojave experiment, then they completely switched it to the Jerry & Bill television spots, now they are switching it again to be a direct take off of the Apple ads (according to the New York Times via MacRumors). This has to be getting expensive, as the market research and production for each of these campaigns can not be tied together, as they each go in a separate direction.
I know we are in an election year, but the similarities between the Microsoft campaigns and the political ads is creepy. First you start off with the everyday people (Mojave Experiment), showing that everyday aspect of your campaign. Then you move into the big name recognition, celebrity endorsements (The Bill & Jerry Show). Now we are moving into the mud throwing. If Microsoft is indeed going with an ad campaign that starts off with "I'm a PC", then we'll know how desperate they really are. Rumor has it that the "PC" in the Windows ads will look like the "PC" in Apple ads, but then feature people doing great things with their Windows machines. I'm really wondering if MicroSoft executives think that Apple won't have a witty come-back that makes their campaigns look silly and child-like.
To me this just seems crazy. How much money is Microsoft going to spend on advertising campaigns? Like before, this is a great example of Apple being able to see clearly, and Microsoft being a little to big for it's own good. Apple's commercials have been straight, to the point, and simple. Microsoft makes 4:30 minute television spots that get canned after two versions. Now they are going to mock the ads from Apple.
Only time will tell, but I'm a little sad that the Jerry spots ended so soon. I did like seeing him again, even if it was with Bill Gates.

If you are a world traveler, or just want to use your cell carrier's data plan on your laptop, check out Nova Media's iCON 401. It's a USB Modem that works on HSUPA, 3G, EDGE, and GPRS coverage. About $290 will get you the device, but you'll still need a data plan from your carrier. The iCON 401 also comes with a Micro SD media stick, so if you are taking pictures you have an easy way to upload your photos to your Mac and to the web.
It's a little pricy, but if you need internet connectivity this would do the job quite nicely, with the additional benefit of a Micro SD media input.

Leopard 10.5.5 breaks ARD hack |

Apple's most recent OS update (10.5.5) breaks a Screen Sharing hack that allowed ARD functionality in the free Screen Sharing app. No word on if the hack will be re-hacked. Originally the screen sharing hack allowed a user to go to full-screen, copy clipboards and use different color depths. If you haven't gone to 10.5.5 and would like this functionality, check out the terminal hack at the nanchette technojunkie's wordpress. The info about the hack being broken is documented on the same site in this post.
*Warning, the post about the hack breaking contains foul language*

TUAW has two great terminal/defaults hacks worth looking into. The first is the printer settings hack, handy if you have to handle printer settings often when you print. In the terminal you can write new defaults to have the printer window expanded by default by running this defaults command in terminal ...
defaults write -g PMPrintingExpandedStateForPrint -bool TRUE
The other hack is to put the recent applications into the Dock. Normally under the Apple menu, having the recent apps inside the Dock is really quite handy. If you used it under the Apple menu, you'll love it in the Dock. Write the defaults with this terminal command ...
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{
"tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'
If you don't like it, just drag it out like you would any other item in the Dock.

This installment of Mac'in Some Money focuses on a new Mac based job board to check out, MacSupportJobs.com. The site launched late last week (Sept 12th), and already has a good number of listings. Only time will tell how well it is updated, but it looks promising.
One of the nice things about MacSupportJobs.com is that it is an international board, with a basic search returning back jobs from France, UK & the USA. If you are in Europe or want to get out of the US, take a look. This could be your ticket.

New Mac/Win games employ USB peripherals |

While the next generation of video games is already being developed in secret labs by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, there is a new niche of computer games coming out. Using specific USB devices to play games like skateboarding, baseball or golf, you will have to guide your first person sports hero to fame with your actual mini-sport skills. Having a hard time conceptualizing this? Think of desktop football, wired to a USB field goal.
The devices are coming from Aptus' Games and will play on internet browsers (probably flash or AIR or something cross-browser/OS capable). Originally marked for the third quarter of 2008, it may be more like a Christmas time gift. AptusGames.com is still talking about the product, but doesn't have any hard details yet about the release or how many games will be available. Keep an eye on these, as it would be a great gift for the gamer in your family.
