What's new in 10.6 "Snow Leopard" |

I personally am feeling ripped off still from the WWDC 2008 Keynote. I hold a grudge for a long time, so maybe it's just me. I really wanted Steve to WOW me with something besides another iPhone. So when i heard about the first screen shots of "Snow Leopard" I got excited. Turns out there wasn't much to get excited about. A couple of pictures of the applications folder and the utilities folder along with the system preferences. Not much going on there. Until you look closer.
While Apple did say they are going to be updating the OS over adding new features, how much they are updating was unknown until this first release. I took a look at what applications are being updated in 10.6 and which ones aren't. The list is surprising long in the udpate side. Granted some are maintenance updates, but there are still a good number of full version or 1/2 version updates. Read on to see a full list of changes so far.

Something's not right with the iPod |

As we all know the 3G iPhone was announced today, yippee. If you can't tell, I'm not all that excited. First there was almost no talk at WWDC about anything but iPhone from Steve Jobs. iPhone this, iPhone that. The keynote was almost entirely about an iPhone related product. Steve mentioned the Mac twice, once in the beginning with their three sides to Apple, then again when introducing the new .mac, me.com.
So I'm upset that the Mac took such a back seat. But what really bugs me is how far back the iPod took. There were two mentions of the iPod, again with the three sides of Apple and that iPod owners could pay $10 for the iPhone software. For being a three sided company, it sounded awfully once sided.

Okay, the keynote is over. If anything cool (besides the 3G iPhone) was going to be released, it would have been released at the Keynote. The only product (besides me.com) was the iPhone. In fact, the iPhone took up about an hour and twenty five minutes of the time during the Keynote. The next runner up was the me.com service which got about 15 minutes. After that you have 2 minutes for an introduction, and that's about it. 1:25 dedicated solely for the iPhone, one sentence on OS X.
Is this the Apple that we used to know? Is this the Steve Jobs that used to be excited about his awesome OS? The great machines? What happened to that Steve? What happened to that Apple?
Okay so here's the breakdown of the Keynote.
Apple now sees itself as a three part company, 1) Mac, 2) iTunes (& iPod), and 3) iPhone.
iPhone SDK is really popular and easy to use. Lots of companies are making software for it.
New 3G iPhone is better than any other 3G cell. Better battery life, faster downloads, better looking.
dot mac is now me dot com. Allows syncing between Exchange server and Mac and iPhone. *(have not confirmed sync between Mac and Exchange server only).
New 3G iPhone has GPS also.
And that's about it? Did I miss anything?

That's it? The Keynote is over? Woa, woa, woa. Wait a minute. No. Uh, iPhone? Really? That's the whole keynote, the new iPhone? What a rip off! Yea great, you can get an iPhone for $199 (plus the $60/mo contract, so it still cost over $1600). But what about OS X.6? What about multi-touch for non-iPhone?
WTF STEVE JOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe all hope is not lost. Maybe there'll be second keynote. Maybe he'll come back out and say "just joking, one more thing". Uhh ... I guess not? Everyone's leaving? It's really over? Man. What a bummer.

It's official. The 3G iPhone is here. Reported to boost download speeds by 2.8 times. Steve Jobs is also claiming that the 3G on the iPhone is 36% faster than the 3G on a Nokia.
Thinner. Full black plastic cover. Great battery life.
... from macrumors live ...
3G has great battery life on iPhone. 300 hours of standby, 2G talk-time
now has 10 hours (as opposed to 5), 5 hours of 3G talk-time (most
phones only have 3 hour 3G talk time), 5 to 6 hours of high-speed
browsing, 7 hours of video, 24 hours of audio.

Syncing Exchange and Mac through Me.com |
|
Written by Chris Tangora

At the WWDC Keynote today Steve introduced the me.com service. Me.com is replacing mac.com, it cost $99/year and allows you to sink your Mac's apps to an exchange server. However, it is not clear if you need to have an iPhone to do this. So far all the talk has been about syncing between the server your iPhone and your Mac. The entire morning has been focused on the iPhone.
Earlier in the month we saw the sync option available if you plugged in an iPhone, then it would go away after a while if you didn't plug the iPhone in again. Hopefully that is NOT the case with the Me.com syncing. It looks like you can view it on the web or on the iPhone.
We'll keep an ear out to see if you need the iPhone in order to make the me.com syncing to exchange server work or not.
The good news it that it is out there. Now all we need to do is hack it so we don't have to pay the $99 a month to have a synced Mail account.

Worst OS name ever, "snow leopard" |

Oh no... It' can't be true. But it is. OS X.6 is going to be .... gulp ... "Snow Leopard". Steve Jobs took the stage today to talk about all things Apple and one of the first things he mentioned was the new OS, 10.6, aka "Snow Leopard".
We are already using Leopard, aka 10.5. It has often been a bit of a joke as to what cat names were left for Apple to use. So I guess it won't be Lynx after all.
More details on 10.6 later.

Another Mac Clone hits eBay |

"Begun the Clone Wars has", as Yoda would say. Looks like Psystar is legit (as in it isn't vaporware) and now somebody else is getting in while the getting is good (before Apple finds its legal ground). Ebay user Chris555 is selling 2 unbranded Mac Clone for $549 each out of Potage, Indiana.
Each clone is packed with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chips with 2 gigs of RAM. Apple hasn't said anything about these Clones, and some of the EULA legality has been called into question lately (Free BSD is supposed to be free). But how far can this go? There are now clones that are sold commercially and personally off eBay. Both come with OS X installed. The ball is in Apple's court now. If they don't step up soon then we'll see more and more clones hitting the streets.
