More bad ads from Microsoft

other-ms-pdc2008-video.pngI'm not for laying people off, but it seems like Microsoft should just "re-assign" everyone in the advertising and marketing departments.  Their latest online ad is a You Tube video for the PDC 2008, and no one word could describe it.  Let me try a few words ... scarey.  sad.  without focus.  worse than the Apple flashdance ad (which before this was the most painful 3:48 of my life, this is now the number one at 3:57).

The advertisement is for the PDC, but I didn't really understand that until the last part when it was written on the screen.  The intro is spoken to fast, the middle is completely illegible, and the end should have everyone walking out of the room, not just Brian.

Anyways, if you are up for a bit of Microsoft based humor, take a look here.

Has Woz lost it?
Written by Chris Tangora

people-woz-01.jpgSteve Wozniak recently did an article for the UK's Telegraph newspaper and he has some interesting thoughts on Apple & Steve Jobs.  Interesting as in a little bit off.  The bit that threw me is that he thinks Steve Jobs doesn't know about products until they are just about to be launched. Yes, you heard me right.  The Woz thinks the other Steve doesn't know what's going on at Apple.  We heard something about this with Pixar, that Steve wouldn't have the time to devote to being CEO of Apple because of other items on his agenda.  But to say that Steve doesn't know what the next product is until it is about to launch is just crazy.

While the Woz does have some crazy clips in the article, he does have a few good points.  Apple shouldn't be comfortable with their cult-like (hell let's just say cult) following, even in an economic downturn.  Woz also says that maybe a slowdown in the IT market would be a good thing, to avoid another .com disaster.  One thing does come to my mind while I read his interview.  When Steve Jobs was talking about the downturn in the market (in the past).  Steve Jobs said that he invest in the company, so when things turn back around Apple is ready to move on.  If the brick is a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, then that is just what Steve and Apple are doing.  Investing in the future, when everyone else is scaling back.  It's worked in the past, we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out now.

5 second boots
Written by Chris Tangora
Tuesday, 07 October 2008
os-linux-tux.jpgThis came out of the Linux Plumbers Conference and I find it impressive.  A team of Linux/Intel developers was able to get two separate Linux builds down to a 5 second boot time.  And by boot time they mean the system is ready to go (minus networking).  The boot was so fast that they couldn't even show it on the overhead screen as the projector took to long to sync to show the boot-up.

They did it by re-arranging & dropping some of the boot sequence and by re-writing some of the code.  The finished product (they say) will work with 95% of the laptops (they showed it on an eePC).  That got me thinking about Snow Leopard.  Snow Leopard is supposed to be like Leopard, only specialized for the Intel platform.  While I don't think the Mac OS will boot up in less than 5 seconds, I do think that it will be dramatically reduced down. And because Apple has their hands on the hardware side of it as well, they can make sure all Macs comply with what is needed for the faster boots.

Just a thought, but if has been done by Intel on Linux, I'm sure they would share some secrets with Apple.

5big is simple yet packs a big punch

press-lacie-big5.jpgLacie released their 7.5 TB 5big network RAID box today.  Aimed at the small business owners who would need 7.5TB of network raid, which I am not but I sure would love one.  Neither the Gigabit network nor the hot-swapable drives are the reason why I want one (though they are good reasons).  I want one because of the design (designed by Neil Poulton).  This is minimalistic.  I mean it's a freakin' box with a light on it, how much simpler can you get?  I know that some people will love it, some will hate it, some will hate the people who love it.  I personally love it.  I want all my comptuers to look like this, just a box, sitting there doing noting.  Or so you think ...

Anyways.  If you need 7.5YTB of network RAID storage, the LaCie 5big 7.5TB is for you.  Granted it cost about $1900.  But if you need the 5big, you gotta pay for the 5big.

Quicktime Bug found in version 7.5.5
Written by Chris Tangora

com-intego.gifIntego's Virus Monitor Center has released a press memo alerting Mac & Windows users to a security bug in the latest version of QuickTime (version 7.5.5).  The security flaw is with how QuickTime handles long strings, with the possibility to heap overflow QuickTime Player in both Macs and Windows.  Right now it will just cause the player or web browser to crash, but in the future it may be possible to add malicious code as well.  Intego is watching it and I'm sure Apple is working on a fix as well.   It will be interesting to see how quickly Apple responds to this and fixes it.

Apple building burns overnight
Written by Chris Tangora

press-applefirefighter.jpgApple's Cupertino campus had some late night visitors, the Cupertino Fire Department.  As far as reports coming in so far it looks like one of the buildings caught fire on the second story and burned for a few hours.  Smoke was reported around 10PM and was considered a three-alarm fire.  The blaze was 95% contained by 12:30.

The fire was supposedly caused by a faulty HVAC unit and was in Valley Green Number Six building.  According to some reports, the building was supposedly housing research and development for Apple.  Hopefully they've been backing up their data; if not I imagine Steve will be pretty mad.

Intel has NVIDIA scared
Written by Chris Tangora

com-nvidia.jpgI guess you could call this a press release, of sorts.  What it seems like to me is a sad attempt at marketing.  NVIDIA has sent out their "viewpoint" about Intel's Larrabee project.  It looks like NVIDIA is trying to start some trouble, and I'm not sure thats a good idea for them.

The "viewpoint from NVIDIA" questions how easy it will be to write for Intel's new GPGPU (General Purpose GPU), as opposed to NVIDIA's CUDA architecture, which they say themselves "has been described as 'hard fro developers'."  Well, I have good news for the Mac users, the answer to NVIDIA's question is yes.  It will be easy for programs to use and easily re-written to use Intel's Larrabee, whenever it comes out.  Apple has the OpenCL framework ready for developers to take advantage of GPU's and is hoping that it will become the open source standard for it.

The text of the messages follows, directly as it was sent to us.
