Sophos suggest buying it's software.
Sunday, 17 February 2008
sophos_logo.pngHere's a big surprise.  A company who makes their living off of selling anti-virus software has said that you need anti-virus software.  Yes, they did  a web poll of 350 users (I guess web users who went to their site?) and asked them if they thought the Mac platform would get hit by more malware in 2008.  Here's the stinker, the multiple choice answers were YES, YES, and NO.  I'm not kidding.

The thre possible answers were "Yes, but not as much as Windows", "Yes" and "No".  This is the second story I've found that has questionable surveys as their roots.  I'm not saying to blindly start installing any applicaiton that shows up on in you downloads folder, but I am saying that without proper research, these surveys (anti-malware surveys conducted by a private anti-malware program) are really just news hype to get their name in the press.

ITWIRE dug deep to uncover the "YES, YES, NO" option.  Props to them.

Walmart pounds nail into HD-DVD coffin.
Saturday, 16 February 2008
bluray-discs.jpegWalmart may have just rung the official death toll for the HD-DVD format.  Despite Microsoft's insistence that HD-DVD was the superior format, Walmart has decided to adopt Blu-Ray as their official High Definition movie format.  This leaves only two studios left supporting HD-DVD, and the world's largest retailer yanking it from the shelves by July.  Blockbuster & Netflix have already declared to Blu-Ray as their HD format.  Perhaps the best sign that the Blu-Ray format is that the Porn industry has accepted it now (after originally supporting HD-DVD when Sony said no-no to porn).

Looks like we can expect to see a Blu-Ray compatible MacPro in the near future.  Overall this should be a good step in my opinion.  The maximum space available on a Blu-Ray standard one sided disc is 50GB, HD-DVD only holds 30GB.  The other benefit of Blu-Ray is that it has 48Mbit/sec bandwith, whiile HD-DVD comes in with only 30Mbit/sec.  The final advantage is the actual disc.  The Blu-Ray discs have a protective layer over them so they will resist scratches better (in theory) and last longer (in theory).

Bluetooth getting up to speed
Monday, 11 February 2008
logo_bluetooth.gif  The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced today that Bluetooth will be getting a bigger byte.  They are developing a way to use existing hardware to transfer information on the 802.11 radio waves.  Bluetooth  devices with continue to operate on the low power / speed mode during normal opperation, but when a large transfer starts it will switch to the high power / speed 802.11.  After the transfer is complete, it would switch back to low power mode.

Bluetooth would finally be getting the much needed speed boost it needs, and will still be able to hold onto the low power consumption it has now (for the most part).  This is the next logical step for Bluetooth, and will be a great help for Bonjour and zero config devices.  It will also allow transfer/sharing of videos and music easily between connected Bluetooth devices.

Your New Web Compass
Sunday, 10 February 2008
Often times you want more out of your Mac (or any computer, but hopefully a Mac).  Safari and FireFox are the two favorite browsers of the Mac user, both are fast, with Safari being a little bit more bloated than FireFox.  Well, the future is bright for the compass, and you can have a sneak peek.

Take a look at WebKit.  The KHTML engine's newest web browser, still in testing.  It is sporting a gold compass (apparently not worried about "The Golden Compass" infringement), and delivers a good speed boost to your web browsing.webkit-thankyou.jpg Columnist Seth Weintraub of computerworld.com tested the new WebKit/Safari and found it to be 2.5 times faster than Safari v3.0.4.

Take a look yourself, and see what you think.  Get your nightly build for Mac or Windows at http://nightly.webkit.org/ .

PS Emulator on iPhone coming
Written by Jacob Head
Wednesday, 12 December 2007
psx4iphone.jpgFrom Engadget, "Those of you who have already loaded up like 1,000 NES ROMs on your iPhone will be excited to learn that an even more powerful emulator is on the horizon, this one for the original PlayStation. Called psx4iphone, and currently in pre-beta, the software is being developed by ZodTTD, the same programmer responsible for the gpSPhone GameBoy Advance emulator for the iPhone and iPod touch.

"According to ZodTTD, if enough people donate, the program could be out within days, complete with sound implementation and memory card support, along with compatibility for a claimed 75% of titles. Still, we've played with the DualShock a time or two before, and considering how difficult FPSEce playback is on Windows Mobile devices with full QWERTY keyboards, we're not sure how well all those buttons, triggers, D-pads, and analog sticks will translate to the touchscreen experience."
