PWN your Mac with a cell phone |

This is a simple "how to" but it is a good example of what's possible. This is as simple as setting up a rule on your Mac's Mail account (inaccurately named iMail in this tutorial) and telling it to run an AppleScript when that rule is fulfilled.
The AppleScript is supplied at the website, but you could also write it easily enough yourself. But you don't have to stop there. You could make your own app using Automator or write your own shell script to run as well. You also don't need it to be a cellular, you could setup the rule to have a specific subject or from a specific account or any other combination.

Here's a real life saver for me. I HATE how my iPod's ear buds kept on falling out of my error when I did something a little to active for the iPod. It annoyed the living daylights out of me. Luckily there is a simple DIY at c-h-a-o-s.com that shows a simple way of improving the headphones.
By taking a simple earplug (like you would wear at a concert or construction site) and punching a 4mm whole in the center, you can have yourself a very inexpensive noise cancelling set if headphones. It takes a little tweaking to get the lenght right, but this defenitely will save my sanity while using my iPod.
Thanks to Dan for referring me to the c-h-a-o-s article.

Here's a cool mod that got burried by some papers on my desk. This one is very cool, and I think that we'll see something like this come out now that the iPhone SDK is out.
TUAW post the "how to" make your iPhone send you messages about the nearest cell phone tower, and have it translated to real world longitude/latitude via Google Maps. While this is great for security of knowing where your iPhone is, as a parent this is really cool to know where your son or daughter's iPhone is.
KID : I was at John's house all night!
DAD : Really? He moved downtown now?
Thank you TUAW.
It's 4pm. Do you know where your iPhone is?

Ever want to see your network or cell information on your iPhone? Doesn't usually show it, but this simple hack lets you get into the iPhone's Field Test Mode to see a variety of system information like, Network Information, Cell Information, GPRS info, PDP info, call info, and versions. You get to the Field Test Mode by dialing this number.
* 3 0 0 1 # 1 2 3 4 5 # *
Then push call. Nice little mod to find out more info about your iPhone status.

Here's a nice quick mod to get your Mac to go to sleep quickly. By default your Mac will write the contents of it's RAM to the hard drive before going to sleep as a safety feature against data loss if the power goes out / battery drains completely. This can take a while if you have lots of RAM (2GB+) and it may not be necessary if your MacBook is always plugged in or you run your Mac Mini on a UPS. Do this simple command line and you can set your sleep mode to a non-safe sleep that does not write the contents to the hard drive.
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
If you want to go back to safe sleep mode you can change the 0 to a 3. You can add the SmartSleep preference pane to go to safe sleep mode if the battery is running low. Jinx.de has better explination of the sleep/hibernation setup, and their SmartSleep is a freebie. While there take a look at JollysFastVNC, my preferred VNC client.

Turn your Mac Pro into a Beast |
|
Thursday, 13 March 2008 |
From the same guy that brought you the Mac Mini CPU upgrade comes an upgrade for the professional users. This time he is beefing up his Mac Pro. And by beefing up I mean making it a bad ass mod'd Mac. He took his Dual Core Xeon Mac Pro and upgraded it to an 8-core processor that carries about 65 GigaFlops of power.
He goes over what to mask out on the CPU to get higher bus speeds, and what part needs to be removed when. The most impressive stat I saw was his use of handbrake. He achieved 103fps using about 30% CPU. Even with HVAC.264 encoding and 2 AAC audio tracks he still gets 50 fps and only uses 50% power. And speed, try a 90 minute movie done in 5 minutes.
This would also void your Apple Care Warranty.
