Mac OS perfect fit for laptop-tablet

other-m912x-tabletmac.pngUK Apple user Stuart Lowe has made a hackintosh with a touchscreen Gigabyte M912X.  Running on Intel's Atom processor the 8.9" touchscreen tablet seems to run smooth.  Apple's InkWell works great with the touchscreen using either a finger or a stylus in either position (upright or in slate mode).  Watching him thumb through folders with the coverflow option in Finder made me want one so bad.   That is what coverflow is made for.

The cool part is that we know this is possible, and you don't have to mod together a stylus and laptop to do it anymore (sorry Wei, but I do like your iTab mod ).  Everything Apple needs is already built into the OS, so why haven't they tried to do this?  Are we going to see touch-screen laptops on October 14th?

On why we mod

MacMod user and lowendmac.com contributor Phil Herlihy has written a nice introduction to modding over at LowEndMac.com.  The article highlights why some people choose to go the modding route.  It's a quick, but good read so head on over and take a look.  He's also got a nice article on upgrade options for your old Macs.  In my opinion, it's a mod if you replace the memory or if you paint it neon orange with blue flowers.  Just different extremes.

More bad ads from Microsoft

other-ms-pdc2008-video.pngI'm not for laying people off, but it seems like Microsoft should just "re-assign" everyone in the advertising and marketing departments.  Their latest online ad is a You Tube video for the PDC 2008, and no one word could describe it.  Let me try a few words ... scarey.  sad.  without focus.  worse than the Apple flashdance ad (which before this was the most painful 3:48 of my life, this is now the number one at 3:57).

The advertisement is for the PDC, but I didn't really understand that until the last part when it was written on the screen.  The intro is spoken to fast, the middle is completely illegible, and the end should have everyone walking out of the room, not just Brian.

Anyways, if you are up for a bit of Microsoft based humor, take a look here.

mod-arcadimac-gameover.jpgMacMod member napes has posted a mod-tease on our forums.  His creation, the ArcadiMac, is a Bondi Blue iMac (233MHz) that is setup in a home-made cabinet to run classic video games.  Take a look at the forum and see the pix and let napes know what you think.  We'll report back when his mod guide is up.  This would be a great thing for all the old-schoolers out there.  I'm just sad I gave my iMac away!

Has Woz lost it?

people-woz-01.jpgSteve Wozniak recently did an article for the UK's Telegraph newspaper and he has some interesting thoughts on Apple & Steve Jobs.  Interesting as in a little bit off.  The bit that threw me is that he thinks Steve Jobs doesn't know about products until they are just about to be launched. Yes, you heard me right.  The Woz thinks the other Steve doesn't know what's going on at Apple.  We heard something about this with Pixar, that Steve wouldn't have the time to devote to being CEO of Apple because of other items on his agenda.  But to say that Steve doesn't know what the next product is until it is about to launch is just crazy.

While the Woz does have some crazy clips in the article, he does have a few good points.  Apple shouldn't be comfortable with their cult-like (hell let's just say cult) following, even in an economic downturn.  Woz also says that maybe a slowdown in the IT market would be a good thing, to avoid another .com disaster.  One thing does come to my mind while I read his interview.  When Steve Jobs was talking about the downturn in the market (in the past).  Steve Jobs said that he invest in the company, so when things turn back around Apple is ready to move on.  If the brick is a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, then that is just what Steve and Apple are doing.  Investing in the future, when everyone else is scaling back.  It's worked in the past, we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out now.

5 second boots
Press
Tuesday, 07 October 2008
os-linux-tux.jpgThis came out of the Linux Plumbers Conference and I find it impressive.  A team of Linux/Intel developers was able to get two separate Linux builds down to a 5 second boot time.  And by boot time they mean the system is ready to go (minus networking).  The boot was so fast that they couldn't even show it on the overhead screen as the projector took to long to sync to show the boot-up.

They did it by re-arranging & dropping some of the boot sequence and by re-writing some of the code.  The finished product (they say) will work with 95% of the laptops (they showed it on an eePC).  That got me thinking about Snow Leopard.  Snow Leopard is supposed to be like Leopard, only specialized for the Intel platform.  While I don't think the Mac OS will boot up in less than 5 seconds, I do think that it will be dramatically reduced down. And because Apple has their hands on the hardware side of it as well, they can make sure all Macs comply with what is needed for the faster boots.

Just a thought, but if has been done by Intel on Linux, I'm sure they would share some secrets with Apple.
