The Government Has the Key to your Mac

other-subrosasoft-maclockpick.jpgThink having a Mac is going to help protect that pesky G-Man from looking in your computer?  No more.  Apparently SubRosaSoft has developed a flash drive named MacLockPick that will allow any government official to get complete an total access to your Mac.  Passwords, encryption, file and folder details, IM, Mail, and much more.   Don't worry, this is only available to government law enforcement officials.  Your girlfriend or room mate won't be able to get this and blackmail you.

Airbrushed Guitar shows craftsmanship
Other
Wednesday, 02 July 2008
other-dirtdesignsgraphic-optimusguitar.pngWhile some people think that airbrushing a case isn't modding it, after watching this video I would have to disagree.  Dirt Designs Graphics generally does airbrush painting for motorcycles, but took on the job of airbrushing a Guitar Hero controller.  While it does not say how long it took him to airbrush the Optimus Prime (in automobile mode), you can see that it isn't a quick job.

This video shows the detail and craftsmanship that goes into a good paint job.  Somewhat inspirational if you are getting ready to do a paint job on your own mod.

See the video at YouTube then cruise over to Dirt Designs Graphics for more.

Freeware for controlling your fans

other-smcfancontrol.pngWith the high heat of summer laptop owners are finding their Macs running even hotter than normal.  One way to combat the high heat is to live in an isolated closet set to 69º or move to Alaska.  For those of us who want to continue with our lives though, Hendrik Holtmann has a great free tool out there called smcFanControl.

smcFanControl works pretty darn good.  It's a simple menu bar icon that can show temperatures and fan speeds, or just the icon.  You can set up preferences for minimum fan speed for different power situations, and you can quickly change them on the fly.  If you have a laptop and want a little bit more control without going overboard, smcFanControl is worth the download.

XtremeMac bought by Imation
Press
Tuesday, 01 July 2008
press-xtememac-imation.pngA possible sign of things to come for small Mac-based companies has happened.  The Mac accessory company XtremeMac has been bought out by Imation (a 3M company), press release here.  XtremeMac has shelf exposure at the Apple stores and this should help push for more Mac accessories by Imation in the future.  XtremeMac will not be changed just yet, as their financials will not really effect Imation.

This looks like it is more for getting a quick foothold in the Mac marketplace for Imation than about a corporate takeover.  Hopefully we will see more money for Mac development at XtremeMac now that it has a sugar mama of a corporate sponsor.  Generally XtremeMac has been focused on the iPhone/iPod segment, but with more funding we may see more for the other sections of Apple.

Hangin MacMini Mount
Other
Tuesday, 01 July 2008
other-macessity-hangwithmi.jpgFor everyone who is using the MacMini as a HTMC this looks interesting.  Macessity's "Hang With Mi " allows you to easily mount your Mac Mini under your desk (or entertainment center) and gives you a 4-port USB hub up front, under the unit.  Priced at $49.99 this is a nice addition to a Media Center, and for another $9.99 you can get the Power Grip Bracket that will allow you to also suspend your power brick under a table.

Both pieces look sturdy and the Hang With Mi has been painted to match your MacMini.  Macessity has a few other cool little items out there to take a look at if you have a few bucks to throw down for accessories.  I like the LowKey Stand for the Cinema Displays/iMac.

Take a look at Macessity for a few cool items.

10.5.4 is out and about
Apple
Monday, 30 June 2008
leopard_dvd.jpgWell, there isn't much special in this update.  About what you would expect from a minor release.  However, one thing that will be very good news for some of you is the fix for CS3 files that are saved and accessed on a remote server.  This has been a huge issue for a large number of graphic artists.  When saving files to a remote location it breaks the file and its irreversable.  It is a good thing Apple stepped up to the plate with a fix for this!  Aside from that, expect to see some security updates, and a couple fixes for your fav apps.  Read on for the full list.
