Inter-App Video with your GPU
Other

other-vade-v002screencapture.pngUsing the GPU to process data is a recent tech world buzz.  The University of Antwerp (Belgium) recently made a super computer composing mainly of 8 NVIDIA GPU's (4x MSI 9800GX2 graphics cards) to do their calculations in Tomography.  But what about the average Joe?  Applications need to be written to take advantage of the GPU and that is what Anton Marini (Vade) has done.

Vade has written a Quartz Composer plug-in named V002 Screen Capture that allows you to take either your entire desktop or a portion there of and use the GPU to process effects on it while feeding it to another application.  Dubbed "Inter-App Video" it allows you to take full advantage of your GPU while doing some video tasks.  While this won't get our Mac up to super-computer status, if you are into video this will be of interest to you.  Because it is a Quartz Composer plug-in you can use it in applications like VDMX or Quartz Composer itself.

Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive mod

other-mba-superdrive-forall.jpgThe $99 Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive is a slim DVD-R that fits nicely with the MacBook Air, it could also easily fit with any Apple product, but the device is set to work only with the MacBook Air.  tnkgrl had other plans for it.  She (assumption on my part that tnkgrl is a girl) went through and tried hacking all the parts of the device to see why it would only work with the MacBook Air.  She tried the drive outside the case, she tried adding additional power to the USB cable, and nothing worked.  In the end she figured out that the IDE to USB bridge was holding it back.  After finding a $9 replacement and soldering some things she was able to get a fully functional MBA SuperDrive to work with any device.

If you are looking to do the same, check out her pictures over at flickr with the story in her own words.

OS X on a stick
Other

other-efix-usb1.jpgIf cracking OS X wasn't easy enough as it is, you now have EFiX to make it even easier.  The EFiX USB-1 device allows you to install OS X on a standard PC straight from the Apple install discs.  The device is in pre-release now, and no word on who will be distributing it either.  There are also some empty pages on the site that point to them releasing a full-system (like Psystar) and a PCI version.

The EFiX device would update itself with the latest firmwares available, so you would be able to use the standard Apple updates after the firmware has been updated.  No prices on the website yet, but if you wanted to move a PC you have to the Mac, this would be a simple solution.

Damn you Mongorians... Ohh, a Trojan Horse!
Other
Friday, 20 June 2008
trojan_horse.pngFor those of you non-South Park folks...  Someone has done it again, put out another lame Trojan for the Mac.  Now, I know we don't really need to post this here on MacMod because all of you are waay too smart to make this mistake, just like Tuong-Lu Kim.  But, I swear, those damn Mongorians keep coming back to try and tear down my shitty fire-wrall.  This time its different though, I got the inside scoop of sweet and sour pork straight from the undercover Mongorian traitor, intego.com.

"A Trojan horse has been found in the wild masquerading as program for Mac OS X called 'PokerGame'. The Trojan in question is a shell
script encapsulated in an application, and is distributed in a 65 KB Zip
archive; unzipped, it is 180 KB.

"The Trojan horse, when run, activates ssh on the Mac on which it is
running, then sends the user name and password hash, along with the IP
address of the Mac, to a server. It asks for an administrator's password
after displaying a dialog saying, 'A corrupt preference file has been
detected and must be repaired.' Entering the administrator's password
enables the program to accomplish its tasks. After gaining ssh access to a
Mac, malicious users can attempt to take control of them, delete files,
damage the operating system, or much more."

I'm gonna get you Mongowians if ids da lasd ding I dooooooo!!!!!!!!!

openserv_2400_48494adf99c94.jpgHave you every wanted to get an xserve setup , but really couldn't afford it?  Well now is your chance to have Mac OS X serving up all those files.  Psystar has just announced the release of their rack mount servers dubbed OpenServ .  Each of the OpenServ servers come in a 1U or 2U chassis and are fairly configurable, supporting one or two quad core xeons, 4-16GB RAM, and Your choice of SATA HD for the 4 onboard drive caddies.  Psystar also offers a wide range of OS options including Mac OS X Server which is very pricey for unlimited clients ($1025).  Might I recommend another flavor of unix... say, Centos 5.1 (which Psystar even recommends).

Newton webserver still lives
Other
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
npdslarge.jpgSometime around 6 months ago I remember checking out Grant Hutchinson's Newton webserver , running NewtonOS and Newton personal data sharing.  Grant had been running a section of his site with his Newton.  Much to my surprise, when I went back to visit his site; lo and behold, the Newton is still serving up the pages!  Granted the server had only been up for a little over an hour, thats still pretty amazing.

Grant also has a web screen cast if you want to see whats on the Newton's screen at the moment, a listing of installed packages, and some other stats.  Its worth a look.  Lets see if we can flood it with traffic and crash it...
