The most painful 3:48 of your life.
Apple

apple-leadingtheway.pngOkay.  If you haven't seen/heard this yet you must go see it.  If you can still say you are a fan of Apple afterwards, then you truly are a fanatic.  Seriously though, this is a rough 3 minutes and 48 seconds.  The flashdance themed advertisement for Apple from the 80's reported by AppleInsider is hard to describe, the only words I can think of is "totally 80's".

Go ahead and watch it.  Then come back and post a three word description of your experience.  Mine  ... "oh the pain".

Leopard Peeps - Tweaking your Terminal

picture_1.pngIf you are anything like me, you live in Terminal.  Over the years Mac OS X has become a very beautiful OS and looks nice.  With the release of Leopard, Apple finally gave Terminal the much needed upgrade.  You can now have multiple tabs, window groups, and even theme your window.  Thats all well and good, but Apple left off some pretty important parts, like color coded text for highlighting different things in code and your directory structure.  Also, the stock themes that Apple offers are kinda lacking.

So, during my quest to improve some of these pitfalls, I came across Todd Werth's blog on Infinate Red.  Todd details how you can add color coding and a new theme he created thats quite nice, simple and black.  So, if you live in Terminal as much as I, this is def worth a look.

Todd's install instructions

O yea, on a similar note.  Every wondered what "sudo rm -rf /" would do to your mac?  Watch!

OSX86 on a PC, sans hacks!

8x6.jpgSo, a company by the name of EFI X has just announced the release of their new device for installing an OEM copy of Mac OS X with a planned launch date of June 23.  Apparently this is a unique USB device that offers the ability to copy over certain system files and drivers (I suspect).  Taking a look at the company's website will reveal what appears to be plans for a pci device as well.

The FAQ page of EFI X leaves a lot of mystery still in the air.  What we do know is.

1.  It won't work with AMD
2.  It will work with laptops
3.  Its been tested out on a "production" level.
4.  Its some unique USB device, and possibly a PCI device as well

What we don't know is, pretty much everything else at this point.  While I like the idea of this product.  I am not so sure Apple will be pleased with the release.  Additionally, I need more details before I take this too seriously.

AppleTV with SSDs
Other
Saturday, 14 June 2008
other-appletv-ssd.jpgSolid state drives are becoming more and more popular as their prices drop and their sizes increase.  Josh Lee has hacked his AppleTV to be the first SSD AppleTV.  The fame, the fortune, the massive system performance improvements!  Right?  Not quite.  SSD's do run cooler, but the AppleTV has a parallel ATA drive, so you're not going to be seeing much of a performance improvment.

Josh says that the temperature has dropped, but the performance is the same.  He used the command line utility diskutil to resize his 40GB image down to 32GB to fit into SSD.  For $160 if heat and power consumption is your thing, than try this.  Otherwise I'd wait until the SSD's drop in price a bit more.

Snow Leopard to support ZFS
Apple
Friday, 13 June 2008
apple-snowleopard-zfsdisk.pngDoing a little bit more digging into what is new in Snow Leopard I found something I'm actually excited about, ZFS.  When the OS was in the Tiger days there were rumors and meetings with Sun about licensing the ZFS format for the Mac.  The developer and I believe a few beta releases had ZFS support in it.  Now with Snow Leopard they are changing that, the Snow Leopard will have full ZFS read/write support.

From the Apple Snow Leopard Server site :
For business-critical server deployments, Snow Leopard Server adds read and write support for the high-performance, 128-bit ZFS file system, which includes advanced features such as storage pooling, data redundancy, automatic error correction, dynamic volume expansion, and snapshots. Read on for more details.

What's new in 10.6 "Snow Leopard"
Apple
Wednesday, 11 June 2008
apple-osx6-snowleopard-10a96.jpgI personally am feeling ripped off still from the WWDC 2008 Keynote.  I hold a grudge for a long time, so maybe it's just me.  I really wanted Steve to WOW me with something besides another iPhone.  So when i heard about the first screen shots of "Snow Leopard" I got excited.  Turns out there wasn't much to get excited about.  A couple of pictures of the applications folder and the utilities folder along with the system preferences.  Not much going on there.  Until you look closer.

While Apple did say they are going to be updating the OS over adding new features, how much they are updating was unknown until this first release.  I took a look at what applications are being updated in 10.6 and which ones aren't.  The list is surprising long in the udpate side.  Granted some are maintenance updates, but there are still a good number of full version or 1/2 version updates.  Read on to see a full list of changes so far.
