If you keep up with our news, you'll find that we constantly get "top 10/5/12" lists all the time. Often, it's usually a rehash of the same list that somebody posts just to get digg coverage. Not this time! Lifehacker.com gives a top 10 list that is truly worthy of the title. Though most of the applications are not known by the masses, they are very useful.

For those of us who work late in to the night, you shouold give Nocturne a try. Nocturne is an application that generates a “night vision mode” for your Mac — similar to looking at a negative of a photo. For years, you’ve been able to do something similar by hitting “ctrl-opt-cmd-8,” which invokes “Switch to black-on-white” in Universal Access options, but the switch is usually too drastic. This is where Nocturne comes in.

While OS X has been designed without need of a command line, finding out how to use it can make your life a lot easier. Ever wonder what you can do with packages in OS X? Macosxtips.co.uk has an excellent article on what you can do with them. Packages are great because they make it very easy to tinker with the way applications work. Here are a few tricks that are done using the Finder's "Show Package Contents" command. Change the unexpectedly quit message to something more light-hearted, customize the appearance of System Preferences, modify the iCal alarm clock message and more.
