Have a full sized PCIe card you would just love to put in your MacBook Pro? With ExpressBox from Magma, you now have that option... sorta. Unfortunately, there are a few limitations: drivers must be available, you're limited to 55 watts of power, while supporting a 16x interface, it only operates at 1x speed. If all of that doesn't give you pause, perhaps the beginning price tag of $729 will. Still, one can only imagine the modding possibilities...

And you thought a quad core was fast! Bare feats put the 8-core Mac Pro to the test verse the Quad core Mac Pro. Both Mac Pros are running at the same clock speed (3GHz), used the same 8 memory modules (total of 16GB) and identical models of hard drive. The 8-core had the Quadro FX 4500 graphics card while the 4-core had the Radeon X1900 XT. However, most of the testing was CPU intensive so it shouldn't create too much of a difference.

This mod is a little obvious... simply take out your optical drive and double your hard drive space. XBench results show a fair increase in many tasks, although a decrease in some small-block reads, and of course a hit in battery life as well. Other caveats include his keyboard no longer fitting quite right and an increase in noise coming from the second drive, but all-in-all Eric seems happy with the experience, and says the systems seems more “snappy."
