PC Mod - armed and dangerous |

While the guns may not fire, this PC mod can double as your home security system. The mod is based around Team Fortress 2 (TF2) from Valve and is a sentry from that game. TF2 is a class based online war game (think D&D using modern weapons online). This is the second mod of the TF2 style, the first being a health dispenser mod.
This is a great mod, but the only draw back is that the guns don't work. Now show me a mod that can blow away a real thief and that will be a great mod. The TF2 sentry mod is done very well though. Very clean lines and attention to details, with a complete build log at bit-tech.net's site.

Apple releases legal team against Psystar |

Apple

Well it's about time. Apple has filed a lawsuit against Psystar. The one year old Psystar will now have to deal with the Apple legal team. Speculation as to what took Apple so long runs wild on the web, from finding solid legal evidence to wanting to make sure Psystar had money to pay up. The real reason, nobody knows. Psystar is claiming that Apple is violating Monopoly laws (no passing go without collecting $200, haha), and they have the right to make the Psystar clones.
The law suit does put Apple into a tight spot with some *nix and Windows users. Apple's use of the legal team may go against their alternative company image they have created. If the lawsuit is successful in stopping Psystar, how far will Apple go after that? Will they go after the EFiX USB device or similar devices that allow a user to install OS X onto any machine, or are they going after Psystar as something specific to their business model? Will this decrease conversion rate of the more techie/modders from Windows to Apple?
As more develops we'll let you know.

Metal Ground Effect for unique feel |

There is a simple, yet unique way to turn your case into a unique case. An effect called Ground Metal painting, sometimes called etched metal painting. Usually found around hot-rods or custom cruisers, the ground metal effect can easily transfer to a computer case mod.
The idea is simple. Get some stainless steel that you will be using for the case. Take an angle grinder and make looping or unique patterns in the metal. Come back with a clear or translucent paint on top of it, and continue with airbrushing a design on top of it. The end result looks really cool. Even with clear paint the details and pattern alone are enough to draw some attention to your mod. Add in the color to the paint and you can achiever great details and textures not available on plain sheets of metal.
There are DVD's for sale on how to do this, or you could just experiment yourself and see where it takes you. The Case Mod Blog is doing it as a workbench, and plenty of modern artist use it as a medium.

The most disturbing case mod ever. |

We've seen some interesting mods posted here. Some required a unique taste (like the anime 2/3 scale mod), some were just sweet (Hideo's Mini Pro). This one, however, is one of the most disturbing mods I've ever seen. A beaver, stuffed with a computer. I don't know if the creator is a taxidermist or what, but I would feel very uncomfortable with the beaver eyeing me down every time I booted up my computer.
Take a look and see what you think. It's named "Compubeaver," and while the fan is the exhaust, it is not THAT exhaust (thank goodness).

Victorian/Steampunk Mac Accessories |

MacMod member RadioC1ash has made two simple, yet effective mods to his home Mac's keyboard and mouse to give them a Victorian/steampunk feel to them. When RadioC1ash saw the 2007 Great Mod Challenge winner Electronumerograph he got inspiration for his Mac at home. RadioC1ash wanted to make his Mac feel more at home in his 1900's home, so as part of an anniversary gift he took their keyboard and mouse back in time.
RadioC1ash did not completely disassemble the keyboard like some Steampunk keyboard mods do, instead he focused on the feel of the 1900's. He mod'd his keyboard to look more like a typewriter, while not giving up the functionality, by painting it with flat black and gold. He also went after his mighty mouse. Again, not wanting to loose the functionality he went with an exterior mod on it as well. The black and gold paint job matches up nicely with the keyboard.
Both pieces are to be anniversary gifts as part of a larger G4 steampunk mod. I'm looking forward to seeing more of RadioC1ash's work and everyone else's mod submissions in the Great Mod Challenge 2008.
