It looks like either EFI-X is shipping to America, or someone had one sent to them via a third party. Either way, the first look at EFI-X V1 is online at insanelymac.com. User qbattersby has the first unboxing pictures of the USB device that will allow installing OS X on non-Apple X86 machines, and so far it is looking promising.
EFIX originally (and still today) says they support specific Gigabyte motherboards, but another InsanelyMac user (np_) says that he was able to get the Asus motherboard to boot off his EFI-X V1 as well, though he post no pictures of it. Either way this opens up Mac Modding to a whole new level, and begs me to ask the question, what is a Mac?

New Nano Take-A-Part reveals Built-In Bluetooth |

iFixit.com (sponsor of this year's Great MacMod Challenge ) has posted pictures of the 4G Nano disassembled step by step. It's a pretty interesting design this time for Apple, both inside and out. One of the highlights is the built-in BlueTooth in the Nano. Presumably for the Nike+ part of the iPod, but who is to say that this couldn't be hacked in the future for more functionality. Another interesting (and a little shocking) is the glass on the iPod Nano is held in place only by the components on the inside, no adhesive was used to keep it in place.
Head on over to iFixit.com to see the whole story.

A Mostly Harmless Case Mod |

Here's a nice break from all the iTunes / iPod news flying around after Apple's latest product releases, a Mod for all Douglas Adams fans (myself included). The mod is Mostly Harmless, a pun on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's entry for Earth. The machine is a hefty AMD Athlon 3200 with 2Gigs of RAM and two 160GB hard drives. The mod took about 2 months to put together, but in the end I'd say that it represents HHGG pretty well.
The red button, "don't panic", "mostly harmless", and an actual guidebook on the side. If you like Douglas Adams, then you should take a look for a good chuckle.

Apple case mod featured on Intel Mod Contest |

Dell & Intel is hosting a gamer's case modding contest as part of the extreme gaming tour, and I was surprised to see the first entry, a G5 case mod. The guts of the G5 were removed and was almost completely replaced with a gamers rig including lights and an oversized liquid cooling system. Unfortunately right now the mod is in the negative points, but if you have a chance to vote (must be registered on extremegamingtour.com ), make sure you vote for hybridchemistry's G5 case mod. While it's not a Mac, it was in a past life.

Hackintoshes (non-Apple OS X machines) have been growing more and more popular, since Apple's hardware lines have seemed to lack the initiative or funding the iPhone line has had. Multiple liliputers (mini-computers) have come around that Mac enthusiasts love, but there are no equivalent options for the Mac. So they go out and they buy a non-Apple machine and try to get OS X running on it. For the most part they are successful, but not always.
One of the more popular liliputer to put OS X on is the Eee PC from Asus. The Asus Eee PC 1000H comes with the Intel Atom processor and an 80GB drive. Plenty of space for such a small machine. Writer Scot Gilbertson (for WebMonkey) has hacked his 10" Asus EeePC 1000H to run Leopard and has been happy with it, after a two hour install and multiple trips to the BIOS. This does bring up some of the drawbacks to the hacking OS X for non-Apple hardware. There are enough people doing the hacked Eee PC that there is a sight dedicated to the installation and the problems with it (MacEee.Com).

Sun fixes free Mac virtualization |

Sun has released the 2.0 version of their open source Virtual Box virtual machine application. The previous versions had some Mac bugs in it, but they have claimed to fix it. If it works as promised then the updated version will hopefully get some people to re-look at the the Mac as a viable alternative if they don't have to pay for the virtualization anymore.
