product-wii.jpgWhile not a Mac mod, the Wii DVD mod is a nice mod in that it is only a software mod.  The mod is brought to you by Hack Mii, a site dedicated to the hacking of the Wii.

By running the DVDX installer you install the libdi DVD library, then you can use mplayer to watch your DVDs via the Wii.

If you have a Wii, check out the article on HackMii.com for all the details.

Hacking your doorbell
Other
Sunday, 24 August 2008
other-arduino-doorbell.jpgI talked about the Arduino back in May, and I recently saw a cool application of it, to hack your doorbell and report it back to your Mac.  Roo Reynolds has taken an Arduino board and hacked his doorbell to report back to Twitter every time it is pushed.  A few people have done this already, so if you are interested in making your house an online star with its own Twitter feed, follow what Nick and Roo have done.

From Gisvold's Blog (Where Vikings still go abroad, and use Macs to surf the net)

NOTE : I realize that these projects are a few months old.  But they are still cool.

AppleJack for Leopard out soon
Other
Wednesday, 20 August 2008
icon-applejack.pngThe long awaited Leopard version of AppleJack will be out soon, according to a report relased earier today.  The release is still an alpha, but it is looking for testers.  Applejack is a must have for any die-hard Mac user.  It allows you to run scripts at the single user level, before the actual OS gets fully launched.  Leopard had broken some key parts to it, but SorceForge developer Steve Anthony was able to figure out the needed combinations in single user mode to get it working again.

If you have been waiting for a Leopard compatible AppleJack (I know I have), you can become a tester by downloading the script at http://theapotek.com/teknotes/downloads/applejack-1.5a.zip, and reporting the bugs to http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=79562&atid=557034 under the 1.5 grouping.  It should be noted that the new version will only work on Tiger & Leopard.

Use an Apple remote on any Mac
Other
Monday, 18 August 2008
other-mantatr1.pngHave an old Mac and want to use one of those slim Apple remotes?  You can with the Twisted Melon Mantra TR1 infrared receiver.  Cristiano at cristianobetta.com blogs about how he got his old school G4 MacMini to work with an Apple remote by buying Twisted Mellon's Mantra TR1 and the Gravity Apps' Sofa Control application.

Basically the Mantra TR1 acts as the receiver and Sofa Control is the replacement for Front Row.  Cristiano tested the Mantra TR1 with it behind the TV and it still worked great.  A little bit under 2"x2"x1" this device is small and can receive signals from an Apple remote at about 33 feet away (on a fresh battery).

Get more info at the Twisted Melon website and check out Cristiano's blog about his experience.

Illuminate your keyboard for $5.
Other
Monday, 18 August 2008
mod-keyboard-illumniation.pngKipKay has a nice tutorial hosted on youtube about modding an old fashioned keyboard (computer, not typewriter) into an illuminated keyboard.  The illumination comes from the use of the already existent light/power for the scroll lock key found on most PC keyboards.

With a little bit of soldering and drilling, you can hook up tow LED lights to shine down on your keyboard also.  This mod has more opportunity than just illuminating the keyboard.  By tapping into the keyboards simple switches like this (scroll lock light, what a good idea!), you can make numerous controls to do almost anything.  You could connect it to a circuit to turn on a fan or almost anything else.  Be careful as always about the volts, amps, watts, etc.  It is a small light and too much power going through it could cause some damage.
