Ok, so I got my iPhone a little late since the 3 AT&T stores here only had 20 a piece and I was like 40th in line. Nonetheless, another MacModder shipped me one from a location where they weren't nearly as popular. So, after receiving it and beginning the grueling process, here are some tips and notes that may help your activation go alot smoother.
1. TRANSFERRING A NUMBER - When transferring a number you are asked a couple questions. First, you are asked your phone number to transfer. I don't think this matters if you use a hyphen or not. For the record, I didn't. Next you are asked your account number. This should be available on your bill from your current carrier. Then you are asked for the billing zip code. This is the tricky question as it is worded incorrectly. What you actually want to use here is the original billing zip code that was used when your current account was first setup. Finally, you are asked for the password for the account, if applicable. For the record, I didn't have to enter one here.
2. ERROR CONNECTING TO SERVER - Now, this issue is probably one of the most common issues when activating your service. Apple's servers are actually the servers that are processing the orders. When the orders have completed processing they are forwarded over to AT&T's activation team to be completed. This error message means that the servers are overloaded or are experiencing some issues. In order to overcome this problem you should eject the iphone, then re-mount it to itunes until you get another disappointing message...
"Your activation requires additional time to complete. You will receive an email confirmation sent to
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
once your activation is complete."
Or, you may be lucky enough to get a success message in which case your activation should be completed rather quickly. For the record, even though I received this disappointing message, I did get an email from Apple within 5 minutes that the activation had completed. I have heard stories of people getting an email to contact iPhone/AT&T activation for additional setup support. That number is 877-800-3701 for all of you so unlucky.
I hope that these tips help save some of your from being put on customer support hold. Best of Luck. Please share with us any tips you have have experienced with the activation process.
UPDATE: The number has finally been ported. It took just over 48 hours. With a 20 hour window where neither phone had service.
