Apple currently has a handful of patents on the table for multi-touch gesturing. While this would be good for the short term of Apple, it may be a problem in the future. If Apple gets it's way and the patents pass, then we could be looking at multiple ways of doing the same thing on different devices. For example: Say on an Apple product you scroll by holding two fingers to the trackpad (or panel) and slide down. Okay, that works. But since Apple would have a patent on that, if you had to go to a different device you might have to do a circular motion to scroll. Then when you go to your in-laws, they may have another device and there you would have to use two fingers in a circular motion to scroll.
While the patents will protect Apple in the immediate future against other multi-touch technology, it could be problem in the long run when more and more devices get multi-touch aware.
