Secret OS X API discovered
Friday, 29 February 2008
matrix.jpegThere are some undocumented API's for Apple Web Kit that give some apps a big speed boost.  Web Kit is used in the Mac Mail, Safari, and other applications.  The hidden API basically deals with how fast, or how the computers is instructed to, draw images on the screen.  The APi's are there in the open, but there are no comments on them.  Some programmers are saying that Apple is acting like Microsoft (who apparently has lots of hidden API's), while Vladimir (who originally found the API's while developing FireFox 3) says that's not why he posted the find, and it was slashdot twisting his words around.

Bottom line is that there are some hidden features of the Mac OS that are available, but known by non-Apple employees/developers.  Apple has not commented on this, but it is worth watching to see how open Apple responds and if they will help the open source and private market or not.

I wonder how long those particular API's have been around? That latest version of Web Kit is still in beta, perhaps those API's are too. It could be that it will be added to the documentation when the next rev of Safari hits the streets.
