Guy talks to the monkey
Friday, 07 March 2008
microsoft-balmer.jpgGuy Kawasaki made a special appearance at Microsoft's MIX '08 this year.  He kicked off the show by interviewing Microsoft CEO and head monkey Steve Balmer.  The two were casual and the conversations are actually pretty funny.  A few "bullsh1ts" are heard throughout and Guy pokes fun of Steve by telling him he is canning out PR responses.  Seriously though, it is interesting to hear how Microsoft sees themselves and where they think they are going.  Best part : This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   Please use responsibly.

To me the strangest part is the intro by Ray Winninger.  Check out his title during the intro, "Senior Director, Platform Evanelism, Microsoft Corporation".  Really?  Evangelism?  And they call Mac Fans Fanatics.  Microsoft has Senor Directors for Evangelism.  I wonder what the other titles are, "Assistant Evangelism Director", "Secretary to the Evangelism Directore", etc.

Key frames : 27 minutes in Steve acts like the MacBook Air sucks.  56 minutes the Monkey is set loose.

Kawasaki vs. The Monkey

The one thing that I liked was Steve Balmer saying that the MacBook Air was 5 years ahead of it's time. This came up at the end during the Q & A. SteveB was asked about the format wars (HD-DVD vs BluRay) and he said that the question is in 5 years, how much HD content will be sent over the internet and how much will be by disc. That is pretty much an endorsement of innovation by Apple if I ever heard one from a Microsoft CEO.

This interview was very entertaining. They were poking fun at each other the entire time.

Also, I solidly believe that the reason the iPhone SDK announcement was held on March 6th instead of late February was to try to take press attention away from the Mix conference and whatever announcements Microsoft wanted to make.
