Go to sleep, quickly.

homer-sleeping.jpgHere's a nice quick mod to get your Mac to go to sleep quickly.  By default your Mac will write the contents of it's RAM to the hard drive before going to sleep as a safety feature against data loss if the power goes out / battery drains completely.  This can take a while if you have lots of RAM (2GB+) and it may not be necessary if your MacBook is always plugged in or you run your Mac Mini on a UPS.  Do this simple command line and you can set your sleep mode to a non-safe sleep that does not write the contents to the hard drive.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
If you want to go back to safe sleep mode you can change the 0 to a 3.  You can add the SmartSleep preference pane to go to safe sleep mode if the battery is running low.  Jinx.de has better explination of the sleep/hibernation setup, and their SmartSleep is a freebie. While there take a look at JollysFastVNC, my preferred VNC client.
