Install IE 7 on your Mac

Here's a great software mod.  As we all know, Microsoft pulled Internet Explorer from the Mac platform when Safari became a "viable browser" in their eyes.  Safari is finally becoming that viable browser, but sometimes you just need to see the world through Windows (mainly if you are a web designer).

If you like using Boot Camp, or Parallels or VMWare, you won't have this problem.  I personally don't want to have Windows on my Mac.  The answer was documented over at Hi I'm James (hiimjames.com).  He was trying to use WINE to launch IE 7 and it wouldn't work.  He was getting stuck at the install with "IE 6.0: creating winprefix".  He dug a little bit deeper and found this inthe Console "org.x.X11[415] Unrecognized option: -launchd".  Not easily thwarted, he found answer, XQuartz.  XQuartz is the open-source initiative to port the Quartz engine over to X11.  After installing XQuartz he was able to do all his site proofing and checking from his.

Thanks Jim!

Hi I'm James' solution for installing Internet Explorer 7 on his Mac

I've installed X11 in order to run Darwine, but now seem to having the problem that it won't quit! When I try to shut down or restart, X11 restarts and then cancels the action.. I'm a little panicky about this. I'd be Any clue as to what's going on?? I'd raelly appreciate your insight

I just tried IE6 instead. It loads pages great! But it also takes up 100% CPU of both cores in my 2.4 GHz iMac... even after closing the browser window and quitting X11! I had to go into the Terminal and "killall mwine" and "kill -9 processid" where processid was the PID for wineserver, which I got from using the "top" command in another window.

I totally do NOT recommend using ies4osx.

Eek... I don't think I'm going to install XQuartz. Apparently it completely changes and overwrites Apple's X11. Among the warnings in the installer: "we've changed the way launchd starts the server" and "You will need to re-install this package after future OS and Security Updates delivered through Apple's Software Update." That sounds pretty scary to me. I greatly value the stability of my system, so I prefer to avoid major hacks like this.

I tried ies4osx without installing XQuartz first, and I did NOT get the "IE 6.0: creating winprefix" hang. However, later in the installation process I got "err:wineboot:start_services_process Unexpected terminati..." when it was building IE7. "Internet Explorer 7.0," as built by the ies4osx installer, does not load any Web pages at all on my machine. =(

I'm running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2, by the way. Your mileage may vary.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I'm already using IE4Linux on Mac with Darwine... having Quartz in X11 will be a good thing.
