Popular Mechanics says Mac wins

logo-apple-whiteonblack.pngHere's something that is infuriating the Windows evangelicals.  Popular Mechanics looked at a system running Windows Vista and Mac OS X Leopard.  The Macs won hands down.  Granted the systems were different configurations (one had more RAM, one had a faster processor), but that was not the point.  The review was for the form factor comparison.  The comparisons were about the computers as a whole, not nit picking about speeds or RAM.  It's wasn't about the OS as much as the total package.

When it comes to the total package, the Mac is the winner.  Yes, we are a website that deals with main Macintosh so we are going to be a little biased.  But when you look at the overall package, the Mac is the better choice.  It's a monopoly of sorts.  Apple has complete control over their systems (despite PsyStar).  Windows has to deal with countless combinations of new systems and old systems from countless vendors.  Windows also relies heavily on those same vendors for their drivers.  The Mac is more of a use this driver or it won't work, as we all know.  In the end there are ways to work around for the Mac, it's called hacking (just search this site and you'll see plenty).

The interesting part of the article (and often complained about on the Windows forums) is that the review comes from a non-computer magazine.  Many people are saying, what right does Popular Mechanics have to compare two systems, especially if they aren't the same.  Well, to the end user they are pretty much the same.  The end user isn't going to go out searching for hours to find two systems that are spec'd exactly the same.  They are going to look at the system they want and at most compare them.  That is what Popular Mechanics did.  They found two system and compared them.  Don't believe me?  Go into a Best Buy on a Saturday and hang out in the computer section.  Listen to the sales people and the customers.  See for yourself.

Read it at Popular Mechanics

Ok, so you've got someone who's deciding between the Gateway One ZX190, and the 20" iMac.

They're not specific about the operating system, as long as it runs word, and is a productive environment.

Well, they'll compare the price. At comparable specs, the iMac is cheaper by about $50.00. This is without the necessary antivirus software that Gateway recommends getting with the PC.

Also, with a 500GB HD in the iMac as opposed to the One's 400GB HD. I could have chosen the 320 GB for the iMac, but then it'd be even cheaper than the One.

Here's the specs (with the necessary Anti Virus Software for the PC):

20" iMac:
2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667MHz DDR RAM
500GB 7200rpm Serial ATA Drive
Mouse
Keyboard
OSX 10.5 Leopard
One Year Warranty
Total = $1,448

19" Gateway One ZX190:
1.50GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
400GB 7200rpm Serial ATA II HD
Norton Internet Security 2008 (15 Month Subscription)
One Year Warranty
Keyboard
Mouse
Windows Vista Home Edition
Total = $1,485.97

Hmm, the iMac is cheaper... and easier to maintain because you don't have to worry about an antivirus program subscription. The Gateway also has a slower processor. You can't even get a faster processor with it.

As far as the general public goes, iMac FTW.

Uh... gee. I'm not sure if you read the entire article, either here or at PM. Maybe if you look deeper than the first three lines you would understand a little bit better.

1. I blatantly declare a bias. I quote myself, "Yes, we are a website that deals with main Macintosh so we are going to be a little biased. "

2a. Compare apples to oranges. Well first off we didn't do the comparison. Second let's compare, dollars to dollars along side form to form. Makes more sense right? That's what PM did. They compared money and form to money and form.

3. The Mac is the synergy of the hardware and software. A Windows PC is hardware and software trying to work together.

4. Nobody was trying to hide the differences in the computers. From the PM article, "Our computers were closely matched, but in the interest of full disclosure, we’ll spit out the caveats: The Gateway One PC had a processor that runs 400 MHz slower than its iMac competitor (not a heck of a difference in this age of dual-core chips), but it also had two extra gigabytes of DDR2 memory. In the laptop category, our Asus M51 had a 2.2 GHz processor, compared to 2.4 GHz for our MacBook. But the Asus had a larger screen, a more sophisticated graphics card and an extra gig of RAM. "

5. You want to complain about hardware? Did you read the article at Popular Mechanics? Seriously, did you. I don't think you did. If you read the article you would see that they DID compare the OS's on the same machines after the test, and they published results along side the other ones. You know what the final verdict still was.

The Mac Won.

Please read the article before you comment.

If you really don't want to read it, at least look at the fourth page, where they show the results of the Mac running Leopard & Vista compared to the Gateweay Vista machine.

"The Macs won hands down. Granted the systems were different configurations (one had more RAM, one had a faster processor), but that was not the point."

Wow. You compared apples to oranges and then tryed to say the orange was a better apple. Congratulations, you are truly oblivious to your supposedly non-existant bias.

I don't particularly care for ANY current OS solution, so I am completely unbiased.

But, to say that Leopard is a better OS based on the FORM-FACTOR of the hardware it runs on...is just simply the ramblings of somebody not interested in actual fact.

The ONLY way to compare SOFTWARE solutions (be it an OS or anything else), is on IDENTICAL hardware. Otherwise, the hardware inevitably is the differentiating variable of the equation.
