Safari safe from paypal, for now.

com-paypal.jpegPaypal says Safari is safe, for now.

PayPal had said they will no longer accept outdated browsers that do not sport an anti-phishing features.  Many people (including some of us here at MacMod) took that to mean the current versions of Safari.  Apple's web browser Safari does not have a built-in anti-phishing feature, even though it did have it while it was in it's beta versions.

Paypal was contacted by 9to5Mac about the browser question and they told them that they would continue to support Safari,"We have absolutely no intention of blocking current versions of any browsers, including Apple’s Safari, from our website".  Paypal is focusing on blocking older versions of browsers, like computers running Windows 98 and browsing on IE 4.  Really?  That's where paypal is going to focus on?  If you're running Windows 98 and surfing with Internet Explorer 4, you have other problems beside your security on paypal.

A day or two ago I posted a follow-up link in the original article about this:

UPDATE: A representative of the Wall Street Journal "spoke to PayPal" (wow, the whole company?!). Apparently, "contrary to many reports [PayPal] will not block Apple's Safari browser" in spite of the seemingly contradictory remarks from PayPal's Chief Information Security Officer quoted above. It's really dumb that PayPal's Chief InfoSec Officer says "Safari is teh insecure" one week and the next week he says "we're blocking insecure browsers," and yet he somehow doesn't expect people to connect the dots. Michael Barrett should have made himself abundantly clear when speaking with eWeek about this in the first place.

Oh, and IE4??! Nobody in the whole entire world uses IE4 anymore. Seriously. Windows 98 Second Edition came with IE5, and IE6 is available for both Windows 98 SE and Windows Me (however, IE6 is currently only getting patched for Windows 2000 SP4 and XP SP2).

If you are on windows 98 and IE4, you aren't using paypal anyway, so this whole issue is mute.
