mod-mba-evdo.jpgMacBook Air owner Jordan Bunnell boldly cracked open his MBA's case and did a wicked mod.  He took a Verizon EVDO USB stick and soldered it into the MacBook Air's power supply and spare internal USB port.  He then boosted it's performance by using some spare parts from an old Airport Extreme card to get better reception.

The end result is a wicked mod that he can now use to get internet anywhere (almost).  I'm amazed that he was able to fit more things inside the MacBook Air.  He has detailed pictures posted off-site for anyone who is interested in trying this themselves. (This definitely voids your warranty).

How-To add EVDO to your MacBook Air

Excellent though, however... I tried it, doesn't cut it :-( I'm thinking it might be because the Mini PCIe EVDO card only uses the USB bus, whereas the Airport is on the actual PCIe bus. (Kinda like those Expresscard to USB adapters, only work for certain Expresscards) I'm considering an option that would make me loose the sound card rather than the WIFI/BT

Perhaps even more interesting is that USB to Mini PCIe adaptor. You could use one of those to attach a wireless N card from a current or recent Mac to almost any Mac running OS X.
