mod-safar-developer.pngAT & T has siezed control of the wifi market for many popular hot spots (Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, etc).  They are also offering free internet at said hot spots for their favorite customers (iPhone users).  Don't have an iPhone?  Don't worry.  There is a really simple hack that works (at least at the time of writing this).

To get free interenet at the AT & T mobile hotspots set your browser to be "Safari Mobile".  You'll have to enable the developer feature to emulate a different browser, but it is easy in Safari.  Simply go to Safari's preferences and go all the way over to ADVANCED.  On the bottom enable the developer menu to be showin the menu bar. Now go to the developer menu item and change your user agent to be Mobile Safari 1.1.3.

And there's your free wifi!

Apparently the free Wi-Fi was a mistake, and it didn't last for very long. AT&T does indeed plan to roll out this service eventually, but as of right now, free Wi-Fi access for the iPhone is not available and there's no official release date.
