Apple rides iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to strong quarter

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (www.cirpllc.com) has released analysis of the results of its research on mobile phone manufacturers for the calendar quarter that ended Dec. 31. CIRP finds that among the major phone brands, Apple had the largest share of the U.S. market, with half of all phone sales.

"The strength of the September 2014 launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus fueled Apple’s dominance in US mobile phone sales this quarter," says Josh Lowitz, partner and co-founder of CIRP. "Apple had virtually double the sales of Samsung, and five times that of LG. No other brand accounted for as much as 5% of US sales. The Amazon Fire and Blackberry smartphones registered slight share, which we attribute to random sample fluctuation as much as actual sales."

"Because of the iPhone launch, Apple increased its share considerably over the 28% in the July-September quarter," adds Mike Levin, partner and co-...

Global embedded telematics increasingly appearing in...

Market intelligence firm ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) finds the penetration of embedded telematics in new vehicles will increase from 13.4% in 2014 to 52% in 2020.

"While penetration levels of embedded connectivity in vehicles continue to grow steadily, it remains challenging for car OEMs to convince users to pay for built-in connected car services," says says vice president and practice director, Dominique Bonte. "While initiatives such as allowing adding connected car systems to shared data plans by GM in the United States are definitely going to boost uptake, full penetration is unlikely to be achieved solely through consumer-led drivers."

Perceived value of safety services or in-car Wi-Fi hotspots simply aren't big enough (yet), especially with free smartphone integration "tethering" standards such as CarPlay and Android Auto expected to become widespread in the next years, he adds. ABI...

SIM card market reached 5.2 billion units in 2014

ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) forecasts that global SIM card shipments will reach 5.2 billion units in 2014, marking a revitalizing 5.32% increase from 2013. LTE, NFC, and M2M have successfully paved their way into the industry and are considered the trends for the next few years.

The research group says that large markets like India, China, and Saudi Arabia are currently among the last countries to undergo ID registration regulations. Among them only India saw a massive decline in shipments during 2013 but data from 2014 show that the market has successfully stabilized and steady growth is expected from 2015 onwards.

The era of technological advances brings forth renewed competition while the market share battle rages on. In one of the major highlights of 2014, European Union (E.U.) vendors are pushing forward with new product developments in an effort to claim a bigger portion of the market...

Ease of use is vital for companies to communicate with...

A new survey from the IDC research group (www.idc.com) revealed that the most important characteristic to ensure satisfaction in communicating with a company is the ease of use/simplicity of process.

According to the survey, on average, 65% of respondents said they were satisfied with the communication options available. The 18-24 and 25-34 year age groups were the least satisfied, both with 62% satisfaction with the breadth of channel options compared to 65% overall. Seventy-one percent of respondents said that communicating with a company using their preferred channel is very important.

"Companies need to support the communication needs for all of their customers as they have a wide range of preferences. This means ensuring customers are supported on 'newer' channels, such as social media, as well as on 'traditional' channels, even as newer channels grow and evolve," says Melissa O'Brien, research analyst,...

Business needs to reset its purpose to attract...

Business should focus on people and purpose, not just products and profits in the 21st century according to Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited's (Deloitte Global) fourth annual Millennial Survey. This and other findings from the survey suggest businesses, particularly in developed markets, will need to make significant changes to attract and retain the future workforce.

Deloitte Global surveyed tomorrow's leaders, from 29 countries, on effective leadership, how business operates and impacts society. Millennials overwhelmingly believe (75%) that businesses are focused on their own agenda rather than helping to improve society.

"The message is clear: when looking at their career goals, today's Millennials are just as interested in how a business develops its people and how it contributes to society as they are in its products and profits," says Barry Salzberg, CEO of Deloitte Global. "These findings should be viewed as a wake-up call to the business community,...

TV, movies drive the online video market

User-generated content (UGC) or more broadly speaking, short-form video (from services like YouTube and Dailymotion), has become far more than cats playing the piano, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

Companies are using viral ads to extend brands and reach a wider breadth of customers than traditional media channels. Professionally generated short-form content also allows consumers to view video (e.g. news) in bit-sized manageable chunks, ideal for today’s hectic lifestyle. The revenue potential for short-form video is expected to approach US$13 billion by 2019, carrying a six-year CAGR [compound annual growth rate] of 18.5%.

"As the overall online video market evolves we anticipate the value for short-form video will rise in kind. Multi-channel networks (MCNs) that work with content contributors and advertising agencies targeting services like YouTube are finding suitors and...

A new market analysis by ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) finds that the revenues from integrating, storing, analyzing, and presenting Internet of Things (IoT) data will reach US$5.7 billion in 2015. In the next five years, the market will expand dramatically, to an extent that in 2020 it is estimated to account for nearly one-third of all big data and analytics revenues.

"About 60% of this year’s revenues come from three key areas: energy management, security management, as well as monitoring and status applications. Within these segments, we can generally find analytic applications that reduce the cost base of asset-intensive operations (condition-based maintenance), automate routine workflows (surveillance), or even enable new business models (usage-based insurance)," ABI Research principal analyst Aapo Markkanen says. "These early growth drivers also have in common the fact that the economics of IoT...

Worldwide semiconductor spending to increase 0.8% this...

Despite strong growth of 12.9% in 2014, worldwide semiconductor capital spending is projected to only grow 0.8% in 2015, to US$65.7 billion, according to Gartner, Inc. (www.gartner.com). Capital equipment spending will increase 5.6% in 2015, down from 11.3%in the third quarter 2014 forecast, as the largest spenders adopt conservative investment strategies, notes the research group.

"Equipment spending outperformed capital spending in 2014 and will continue to do so in 2015, a situation that will reverse in 2016. Total capital spending will grow 0.8% in 2015, compared with 8.8% in our previous forecast," says Bob Johnson, research vice president at Gartner. "As we get better visibility into individual company spending plans for 2015, it is apparent that caution is a prevailing sentiment, with the exception of memory where manufacturers are adding capacity in response to favorable market conditions."

Mobile broadband modems used in mobile devices and computing outside of smartphones continued to decline over the first half of 2014 (1H 2014), according to the latest study from ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

The market intelligence firm anticipates a 27% drop in unit shipments from full-year 2013 to 2014 to 53 million. Forecasted to be valued at US$3.5 billion in end-user revenues from the sale of modem hardware, vendor ecosystem consolidation continues with some modem makers shifting focus to M2M modules, while other suppliers have been acquired or divested their R&D effort entirely.

"Earlier last year, we predicted the decline based on an evolving market for both business and consumer adoption of computing solutions," says ABI Research Senior Practice Director Jeff Orr. "Increased form-factor choices from tablets to 2-in-1 ultraportable PCs have pushed mobile broadband modems further...

For reference, that means Apple makes around $8.3 million dollars per hour in profit (24 hours a day).

This was a company written off as all but dead less than 20 years ago.

Tim Cook: The Apple Watch ships in April

Ars Technica:

Apple CEO Tim Cook dropped a rare bit of product news on the company’s Q1 2015 earnings call: the Apple Watch begins shipping in April. The Apple Watch will start at $349 for the aluminum Apple Watch Sport model, though starting prices for the more expensive stainless steel and gold models haven’t yet been revealed.

About the time frame we expected. As we get closer to a sales date, I find it interesting how many people I hear are at least interested in seeing the Apple Watch with an eye towards buying it.

Apple has updated its Flash Player blacklist again, this time blocking versions lower than 16.0.0.296 and 13.0.0.264. The move follows a zero-day exploit currently targeting Windows PCs that could also potentially go after Macs, too.

The Mac Observer Spin: If you don't need Flash Player on your Mac, don't install it. Flash is an ongoing security headache that doesn't seem to be improving despite Adobe's constant updates.

Per Macworld, Apple CEO confirmed that the Apple Watch will begin shipping in April. Cook dropped the news on Apple’s quarterly earnings call Tuesday afternoon, saying Apple Watch is “on schedule” and will ship in April. Quad-Core 2012 Mac Mini Mysteriously Reappears on Apple...

Apple today has mysteriously added back a 2012 model Mac mini to the Apple Online Store for $699. The over two-year-old machine still has the same hardware specifications as it did in 2012, including a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000. The listing also shows that the computer ships with OS X Mavericks installed.

It is unknown if the outdated Mac mini has mistakenly resurfaced on the Apple Online Store, or if Apple intentionally reintroduced the model on its website. One plausible reason that Apple may be making this older Mac mini available for purchase again is to provide customers with a quad-core option, as the existing 2014 models are each powered by dual-core Intel Core i5 processors.

The entry-level Mac is listed as out of stock in the United States, and MacRumors could not find the model...

Tim Cook: Apple Watch on Schedule to Ship in April

During today's earnings call covering the first fiscal quarter of 2015, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared some new details on the prospective launch date of the Apple Watch. According to Cook, Apple Watch development is currently on schedule, and the company is planning to ship the device in April.

Development for Apple Watch is right on schedule, and we expect to begin shipping in April. When the Apple Watch was announced, Apple gave a vague "Early 2015" launch date for the device, making it unclear when it would actually ship. Several rumors recently pointed towards a March launch date for the device, but it appears it will actually begin shipping out to consumers a month later, in April.

Cook confirmed that the Apple Watch's April shipping date was within the expected range of early 2015, which Apple...

Earlier this month, we shared an iPhone case called the Reach79, which debuted at CES. The Reach79 case claimed to boost the signal strength and performance of the iPhone, improving battery life, reducing dropped calls, and improving download speeds, statements that were quite controversial in our forums.

Readers were understandably skeptical of the Reach79's promise that it could deliver up to 2x stronger signal strength, so MacRumors decided to go hands-on with the Reach79 case to see if we could prove the company's claims.

We've been extensively testing the Reach79 case on an iPhone 6 Plus for more than a week in various areas around the San Francisco Bay Area, but after several days of use, it remains difficult to conclusively say that the case improves signal in a meaningful way due to mixed test results. Apple today released iOS 8.1.3 to the public, with a range of bug fixes including a fix for an issue that prevented some users from entering their Apple ID passwords for Messages and FaceTime, a bug that caused Spotlight to stop displaying app results, and a problem that prevented multitasking gestures from working on the iPad.

iOS 8.1.3 also reduces the amount of storage space required to perform an iOS update and adds new configuration options for education standardized testing.

iOS 8.1.3, much like iOS 8.1.2, was a minor release that was not seeded to developers before being released to the public. The software is available immediately as an over-the-air download.

Apple is readying a fix in OS X 10.10.2 for the so-called "Thunderstrike" hardware exploit targeting Macs equipped with Thunderbolt ports, iMore has learned. According to the report, Apple patched the vulnerability by making code changes in the upcoming software update that prevent a Mac's bootrom from being replaced or rolled back to a previous state in which it could be attacked. To secure against Thunderstrike, Apple had to change the code to not only prevent the Mac's boot ROM from being replaced, but also to prevent it from being rolled back to a state where the attack would be possible again. According to people with access to the latest beta of OS X 10.10.2 who are familiar with Thunderstrike and how it works, that's exactly the deep, layered process that's been completed.Thunderstrike is a serious vulnerability discovered earlier this year by security researcher Trammell Hudson, enabling...

Today’s post was written by Reuben D. Molloy, director of the Bureau of Information Technology and chief information technology officer for the Government of the US Virgin Islands.

Within the government of the United States Virgin Islands, the Bureau of Information Technology (BIT) works hard to make it easier for government employees to do their jobs effectively. One way we do this is by actively exploring and implementing innovative new technologies. One of our big successes was deploying 3,350 seats of Microsoft Office 365 to give our users access to a robust suite of cloud-based applications for email, collaboration, document sharing  and communication.

Because government employees are spread across 30 different agencies on three of our islands, we need to give them tools that make it easy to work closely together, even if they are physically far apart. With...

Office 365 news round-up

Humans have always longed to know the future, to see what lies ahead and just out of sight. In ancient days, we consulted oracles or shamans. Today, we may seek the advice of futurists, who analyze current patterns and trends to predict future events. At Microsoft, however, we agree with legendary management consultant Peter Drucker, who said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”

That’s exactly what we’re doing with Office 365 and our other cloud services—creating the future—and we recently offered our customers two new opportunities to lend a hand.

First, we expanded the Office for Android tablet preview that we initially introduced in November. Now anyone can go to Google Play to download the Word, Excel and PowerPoint preview apps and then provide feedback that will help us deliver a...

Online meetings get better with Lync and new Polycom...

Sometimes when you’ve been around great technology for a long time, you take for granted that others also know about it and use it. Such is often the case with Lync and the original Lync RoundTable device (Polycom CX5000), which we built in partnership with Polycom. At Microsoft, we use these devices every day as we collaborate in teams that span multiple locations around the world. If you haven’t used a RoundTable device, you’ll be impressed by the ease of use, 360-degree view of the meeting room, sound quality and automatic detection of the person speaking. It’s a simple, well-designed tabletop device that nicely fits within a meeting room.

To give you an idea of how a RoundTable works, the following screenshot shows a Lync online meeting with 10 participants, five of whom are sitting around a conference table with a Polycom CX5100 on top, in a room with a Polycom CX8000 Lync Room System. The conference room participants are all equally visible because the Polycom device...

First look at the new Power BI Preview

This week Michael Tejedor joins Jeremy Chapman on Office Mechanics to give a first look at the updates to Power BI. The preview announced yesterday adds a number of new Power BI capabilities, including dashboards, new visualizations, support for popular software-as-a-service applications, a native iPad app and live “hybrid” connectivity to on-premises SQL Server Analysis Services tabular models. Michael demonstrates all this and more on the show and explains how to establish a secure connection to on-premises data using Power BI.

For those not familiar with Power BI, it is a cloud-based business analytics service for non-technical business users. With just a browser or a Power BI mobile app, you can keep a pulse on your business via live operational dashboards or explore business data through interactive visual reports.

Now you can even try the preview of the new Power BI for free....

US Virgin Islands government connects dispersed...

With...

Quick updates to OneNote for iPhone

The OneNote team is always thinking about new ways to help you capture important information quickly and make it easily available to you wherever you are. These are two essential elements that we focus on so you be more productive with OneNote. I’m excited to share that we recently published an update to OneNote for iPhone with two features we think will really help out as you strive to capture and recall information on the go.

Quick capture your thoughts from Notification Center

One of the most exciting additions to iOS 8 was the ability to install widgets in Notification Center, allowing you to quickly get a glance of new information or perform quick actions without needing to open the app.

OneNote wants to make it as seamless as possible for you to jot down what you want to remember and get back to what matters most. This is where the OneNote Today widget comes in—...

Back in September 2012, in order to better align security and protection solutions with the workloads and applications they protect, we announced changes to the roadmaps of some of the security solutions offered under the Forefront brand.

Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server (FPE) is a Microsoft security solution that also works with prior versions of Forefront server and Antigen products.  Microsoft stopped offering the FPE product in 2012, but committed to supporting FPE subscriptions through December 31, 2015 to give you sufficient time to move. Subscriptions expiring before December 31, 2015 will not be renewed; virus updates and signatures will not be made available after this date and the service will end.

We will continue to support you for another 12 months to give you sufficient time to make your move to alternative solutions...

Video showcases iOS app built with Xojo

Xojo Inc., the company formerly known as Real Software, has posted a video of an iOS app that was built with Xojo. Xojo is an object-oriented, cross-platform software development tool that enables developers to create software for OS X, Windows, Linux, the web and mobile.

The video showcases all the native controls and gives an overview of Xojo's support for building iOS apps. Building native iOS apps with Xojo is the same as building a web or desktop app as you do today. You can view the video at http://tinyurl.com/nvexpk7 .

Developers can use the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of Xojo for free, and will only need to purchase a license once they want to build a distributable version of their application. Licenses are purchased per target platform, including Web, Desktop, Database, Console, and Xojo Pro, which is a bundle license that includes all deployment licenses plus an added...

A look at SkySafari for iOS, Mac OS X and 2012 DA14

This Friday, Feb. 15, a 180,000-ton asteroid with the thrilling name of "2012 DA14" will fly past the Earth. Don't worry, we're not talking a "Deep Impact" scenario. Which is good, right? And you can follow the asteroid using Apple devices.

The 50-meter space rock will come within 17,200 miles of earth -- that's closer than our orbiting geosynchronous communication satellites. Although we don't have to worry about a collision, the passage of 2012 DA14 is a record close approach to the Earth for an object of this size.

Southern Stars has released update to its SkySafari Plus and Pro apps for iOS, Mac OS X, and Android to let you track 2012 DA14. If you want to track the asteroid you'll want the updated apps. Why? Because the Earth's gravity affects the asteroid's orbit so severely, most desktop planetarium programs -- and all other mobile apps -- will completely fail to predict the asteroid's position correctly, says Southern Stars founder Tim DeBenedictis.
