opinion-fathersday-gifts-01.jpgFather's day is approaching fast, next thing you know you'll be making that phone call or going over for the BBQ.  Now's the time to finalize your presents for him before you are stuck getting him a tie he won't wear or worse.  If your dad is a techie dad, it'll be even harder.  But don't fear, I've searched the web and found some cool gadgets for the gadgety dad.

First off comes what could be the best gift this year for the techie dad, a Swiss Army Knife USB jump drive.  Combining the quality and reputation of th Swiss Army Knife with todays' modern needs makes this a great father's day gift.  1GB drives go for $85 and 2GB drives go for $120 at redenvelope.com.  Staying with the USB flash drive gifts we aslo have the Ink Pen Flash Drive and the USB Watch Drive, both from GoDrive.  The Ink Pen flash drive is available in 1 or 2GB sizes, and the watches are available in 256MB up to 2GB sizes in either Stainless Steel dress or Sport Watch styel.  Check out EdgeTech for the watch and pen, or Amazon for the stainless steel watch (only 5 left).

If the dad of your life is into videos, this may be his gift.  Other World Computing has the Elgato Turbo.264 Hardware Video Encoder for $80 at macsales.com.  The Turbo.264 is an USB 2.0 drive that does the H.264 encoding for you.  Posted test showed it could reduce conversion to H.264 formats (for the AppleTV, iPod, iPhone, etc) from an hour down to 12 minutes (based on a MacBook).  If you know someone who is always ripping something from one format to another, get them this.  Also from Other World Computing is the Miglia TVMicro Express for $40 (at macsales.com also).  The Miglia TVMicro is another USB device that allows you to plug in the cable and watch it on your Mac.opinion-fathersday-gifts-03.jpg

All dads love coffee, that's for sure.  If you have a programmer dad or any dad that works on computers, chances are they drink alot of it.  This fathers day you can give the the gift of good coffee, from the coffeefool.com.  The Coffee Fool will roast your beans for you the day they ship them.  If you think you've had good coffee before, wait till you try the coffee fool's fresh roasted beans.  Make sure you get the roast dark enough for you, I suggest the Organic Fair Trade Rainforest for $10.25 / lb, a stronger roast than most, but not to strong.

You might also want to consider getting them some Brain Toniq.  Brain Toniq is a natural brain drink, available online or at select retailers.  While it won't wake you up like a strong cup of Java, it will clear up your mind and help you think straight.  Vegan mind drink with no artificial anything.  See more at braintoniq.com, also available at Other World Computing, macsales.com.

Still looking for something more or different?  If you are "green" then you should check out cleantechnica.com , they have the top ten renewable tech gadgets.  While some of them aren't to techie Mohammed Bah Abba's no-electricity refrigerator) some are wicked techie (the personal winde turbine for $500).  Take a look to make his green face smile.

Have you seen any gadgets out there that would be great for a father's day gift?  If so, post them to the comments.

MacMod has not tested all these devices and can not be held responsible for a dad hating them.

I like to give my Dad gifts that will tap into his emotions (even if he doesn't want me to see them). I gave my Dad a Cake and a Prayer for his birthday and his eyes welled up with tears. The cool thing about the gift was that the website had pre-written gift messages. I was surprised at the quality of the gift and the price. It included the gift card, cake (which was so good we all wanted more) and a framed scripture I selected for my Dad. It had his name on it and was signed from me. After a gift like that, I wondered what I would give him for Father's Day, but I just found out, I can order the cake only with another gift card. Check it out at www.cakeandaprayer.com. I think there's a discount code floating around the internet for a discount on Father's Day gifts.
