Worst OS name ever, "snow leopard"

Oh no...  It' can't be true.  But it is.  OS X.6 is going to be .... gulp ... "Snow Leopard".  Steve Jobs took the stage today to talk about all things Apple and one of the first things he mentioned was the new OS, 10.6, aka "Snow Leopard".

We are already using Leopard, aka 10.5.  It has often been a bit of a joke as to what cat names were left for Apple to use.  So I guess it won't be Lynx after all.

More details on 10.6 later.

I always thought Vista was a pretty lousy name.

The worst part about the name "Snow Leopard" is that it subconsciously implies that it's not a big upgrade; it's still just "Leopard" with a few little improvements. That may in fact be all Snow Leopard will be, based on Apple's marketing,* but to me it seems like such a terrible idea to give it a name that implies that it's a weak, minor OS upgrade (which will probably cost just as much as previous versions of Mac OS X).

From Apple's site:

"Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard — scheduled to ship in about a year — builds on Leopard's enormous innovations [yadda yadda yadda]."

To the Puma comment:

From Red vs Blue:

"Sarge: May I introduce, our new Light-Reconnaissance vehicle. (Rotating around the new jeep) It has 4-inch Armor Plating; Mag... Bumper Suspension; a mounted machine gunner position, and total seating for three. Gentlemen! This is the M12 LRV! I like to call it the 'Warthog'.
Simmons: Why 'Warthog,' Sir?
Sarge: Because 'M12 LRV' is too hard to say in conversation, son.
Grif: No, but, why 'Warthog'? I mean, it doesn't look like a pig...
Sarge: Say that again?
Grif: I think it looks more like a 'Puma'.
Sarge: What in Sam Hell is a 'Puma'?
Simmons: Uh... You mean like the shoe company?
Grif: No! Like a 'Puma'! It's a big cat, like a lion.
Sarge: You're making that up.
Grif: I'm telling you, it's a real animal!
Sarge: Simmons! I want you to poison Grif's next meal!
Simmons: Yes, Sir!
Sarge: Look, see these two tow hooks? They look like tusks. And what kind of animal has tusks?
Grif: ...A walrus.
Sarge: Didn't I just tell ya to stop making up animals?!!?"

Later on...

"Sarge: So, unless anybody has any more mythical creatures to suggest for the name of the new vehicle, we're gonna stick with, the 'Warthog'. How about it Grif?
Grif: No Sir, no more suggestions.
Sarge: Are you sure? How 'bout 'Bigfoot'?
Grif: It's OK.
Sarge: 'Unicorn'?
Grif: No, really. I'm, I'm cool.
Sarge: 'Sasquatch'?
Simmons: 'Leprechaun'?
Grif: Hey, he doesn't need any help man.
Sarge: 'Phoenix'?
Grif: Huh....
Sarge: Hey, Simmons, what's the name of that Mexican lizard? Eats all the goats?
Simmons: That would be the chupacabra sir!
Sarge: Hey Grif, Chupathingy, how bout that? I like it, it's got a ring to it..."

Sorry, made me think back...

Why go to version 10.6 if all you are doing is fixing 10.5? If you are only fixing Leopard, shouldn't it stay in the 10.5 range?

Apple has done this before with the 8 & 8.5 upgrades, but that was a while ago. Why start that all again when the major.minor.maintenance NumVal system was working so well?

Duh.

Why not Lion.

It'd be cool after all... the King of the Jungle.

Seems like an excellent name if it is a performance, stability, and unifying upgrade to Leopard.

"type" and "upgrade". Yes, very unique choice of words. Let's hope that this "type" of "upgrade" seems a little more attention than the Mac did during the keynote this year.

I'm seriously hoping that you aren't referring to what has been posted around the web for the past few weeks.

That would be really lame to imply the "you'll understand that later" if your referring to the Intel only aspect.

Then again, if Apple is opening up 10.6 to be sold by anyone on any box. That would be an "interesting" "type" of "upgrade".

Correct naming taking into the fact the "type" of such upgrade - you'll understand that later.
