WWDC 2008 round up

Okay, the keynote is over.  If anything cool (besides the 3G iPhone) was going to be released, it would have been released at the Keynote.  The only product (besides me.com) was the iPhone.  In fact, the iPhone took up about an hour and twenty five minutes of the time during the Keynote.  The next runner up was the me.com service which got about 15 minutes.  After that you have 2 minutes for an introduction, and that's about it.  1:25 dedicated solely for the iPhone, one sentence on OS X.

Is this the Apple that we used to know?  Is this the Steve Jobs that used to be excited about his awesome OS?  The great machines?  What happened to that Steve?  What happened to that Apple?

Okay so here's the breakdown of the Keynote.

Apple now sees itself as a three part company, 1) Mac, 2) iTunes (& iPod), and 3) iPhone.

iPhone SDK is really popular and easy to use.  Lots of companies are making software for it.

New 3G iPhone is better than any other 3G cell.  Better battery life, faster downloads, better looking.

dot mac is now me dot com.  Allows syncing between Exchange server and Mac and iPhone.  *(have not confirmed sync between Mac and Exchange server only).

New 3G iPhone has GPS also.

And that's about it?  Did I miss anything?

yea, that date came out after I made that prediction. I still don't think it will be ready in a year though. Maybe they will announce at WWDC 2010...

Also, Windows 7 is currently scheduled for release in late 2009 or early 2010, according to several news outlets. That would (presumably) be after Snow Leopard ships if Apple sticks to it "about a year" time frame.

Snow Leopard is "scheduled to ship in about a year":

My guess is that the next WWDC will focus on Snow Leopard.

another one,

I hate to say it, but the majority of the profit for apple comes in the itunes form. Which is a direct result of ipod/iphone sales. And, with the addition of iPhone apps, which is basically making apple the leading distributor of mobile programs, the future of applications, I would say its a great gamble.

The desktop market isn't nearly as volatile as the mobile market right now, and if Apple is going to take hold of a market, its the one to take, and now!

I say, from a business standpoint; hands down, great move! Am I happy that I didn't hear more about snow leopard, yes. But, they did give a nice demo to everyone at WWDC after the keynote. So, it was really just a backseat for the keynote, press, publicity. Great move, IMHO!

Some really cool Windows 7 features were just shown at D6 and now Apple is pushing the iPhone again. Apple may lose some of their ground in the Desktop market for their gain in the mobile. Is it worth it? The majority of the money from Apple still comes from Mac sales, not iPhone sales.

Windows 7 may catch Apple with their guard down.

Well, honestly, 10.5's position in the market is pretty strong right now and Jobs and Co really want to focus on the NEXT platform, mobile. The iPhone really will be the next computer. So, I can see how there was alot of emphysis placed on this. Not to mention the money that Apple will make off this.

I do wish we would have heard something more about snow leopard though. We'll hear something next year, then have a release date a year from that... By that time, Windows 7 will be out though. Apple does need to keep ahead of the game here and not get too distracted.
