Solid state drives are becoming more and more popular as their prices drop and their sizes increase. Josh Lee has hacked his AppleTV to be the first SSD AppleTV. The fame, the fortune, the massive system performance improvements! Right? Not quite. SSD's do run cooler, but the AppleTV has a parallel ATA drive, so you're not going to be seeing much of a performance improvment.
Josh says that the temperature has dropped, but the performance is the same. He used the command line utility diskutil to resize his 40GB image down to 32GB to fit into SSD. For $160 if heat and power consumption is your thing, than try this. Otherwise I'd wait until the SSD's drop in price a bit more.
