Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive mod

other-mba-superdrive-forall.jpgThe $99 Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive is a slim DVD-R that fits nicely with the MacBook Air, it could also easily fit with any Apple product, but the device is set to work only with the MacBook Air.  tnkgrl had other plans for it.  She (assumption on my part that tnkgrl is a girl) went through and tried hacking all the parts of the device to see why it would only work with the MacBook Air.  She tried the drive outside the case, she tried adding additional power to the USB cable, and nothing worked.  In the end she figured out that the IDE to USB bridge was holding it back.  After finding a $9 replacement and soldering some things she was able to get a fully functional MBA SuperDrive to work with any device.

If you are looking to do the same, check out her pictures over at flickr with the story in her own words.
