Using the GPU to process data is a recent tech world buzz. The University of Antwerp (Belgium) recently made a super computer composing mainly of 8 NVIDIA GPU's (4x MSI 9800GX2 graphics cards) to do their calculations in Tomography. But what about the average Joe? Applications need to be written to take advantage of the GPU and that is what Anton Marini (Vade) has done.
Vade has written a Quartz Composer plug-in named V002 Screen Capture that allows you to take either your entire desktop or a portion there of and use the GPU to process effects on it while feeding it to another application. Dubbed "Inter-App Video" it allows you to take full advantage of your GPU while doing some video tasks. While this won't get our Mac up to super-computer status, if you are into video this will be of interest to you. Because it is a Quartz Composer plug-in you can use it in applications like VDMX or Quartz Composer itself.
