Freeware for controlling your fans

other-smcfancontrol.pngWith the high heat of summer laptop owners are finding their Macs running even hotter than normal.  One way to combat the high heat is to live in an isolated closet set to 69º or move to Alaska.  For those of us who want to continue with our lives though, Hendrik Holtmann has a great free tool out there called smcFanControl.

smcFanControl works pretty darn good.  It's a simple menu bar icon that can show temperatures and fan speeds, or just the icon.  You can set up preferences for minimum fan speed for different power situations, and you can quickly change them on the fly.  If you have a laptop and want a little bit more control without going overboard, smcFanControl is worth the download.

Here is one that is more automated: http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/

I use it with my MBP, its nice in the fact that it will automatically kick up your fans when your CPU gets warmer. You do not have to interact with the application other than to set it up. I never liked the SMC one, as you have to turn it up. Have the OS/another application do this for you. Leaves you more time to worry about what your doing, and not your fans.
