Old imacs don't die they get recycled

Old imac's don't die they get recycled, mostly on ebay, but I had one idea for my old imac G3 in indigo.  It was an 500 mhz dv model and had a very nasty habit of shutting down programmes right in the middle of something important.  so as I managed to get and old G4 PPC tower alá 400 mhz for €34 from ebay, and gutting the useful bits out of the imac(hard drive and memory 80 and 1 GB respectively).  I was left with a case and an Idea, if I really removed everything or better said, unscrewed the plastic case from the left over internals.  I was left with some thing that could with potential become an attractive floor lamp.
The lamp inside I had rescued from a lighting firm a few years earlier, and as it was cast metal complete with plug and cable, this idea became really easy to realise.

The required materials were, imac G3 plastic casing
Lamp base with a bit of weight to it, complete with cable and plug.
Cable ties to secure lamp base to imac casing.
     Perspex cut to size.
a print off of your desktop, printed out on OHP foil.
glue (to glue the case together.
1 energy saving light bulb (they don't create to much heat.)

The bulb can be easily changed through the access cover used to remove the bottom cover screws (and radiation shield when you have to change the bios battery.

Glue the top casing parts together, with the perspex cut to shape on the inside of where the CRT used to display. Tape or glue your OHP foil to the inside as to give the impression that the imac is on when the lamp is on.  If you can get milk or frosted perspex, then with a little talent you can paint the boot up screen from the inside, not forgetting as to which way the apple should face when it is finally glued together.

Meanwhile fix the lamp base into the bottom case with the cable ties, screw in the bulb, and glue the top case to the lower case.
The cable and plug can be fed out of the hole where the power cord used to be plugged into.
I also had the plastic casing from the ports and of course glue them also in place (headphone and microphone jacks included.

Hopefully this will please any Mac fan who is sad about the demise of their old imac, this is of course the slot loading model, so you muss not forget to remove the front part of the tray by tray loading models, and glue them into place as well.

This is a nice mod, thank you for posting the photos. I love these old g3s, so much prettier than the g4s on.
