350 days and counting

So according to MacRumor's product guide the Mac Mini has gone for 350 days without an update.  The average length of time between updates for the Mac Mini is about 188 days.  The Mini isn't the only product that appears to be somewhat forgotten  in Cupertino, the displays haven't been update for 476 days now (their average is 230 days between updates).  The iPod touch and the classic iPod are both also reaching end of life cycles, with product dates far outside their average update cycles.

AppleInsider claimed insider info back in March about updates to the Mac Mini, and some "product transition" before September.  To me this seems like it would be a good time frame for the Mac Mini updates.  If prototyping started in March, they should have a working model now, with production starting in the near future.  This would give them the September ship date option.  What would a new Mac Mini look like and why has it taken so long?

To answer those two questions, lets take a quick look at the last three NEW products released from Apple recently, the Apple TV, iPhone/iPod Touch and the MacBook Air.  It is easy to think that some of the resources for Mac Mini development has been pushed to other departments (MacBook Air).  But now that those products are off the ground, that technology and resources will be available for the desktop side.  So if you are wondering what a new Mac Mini will look like i think you should be looking at a hybrid between the MacBook Air and the Apple TV.  Expect to see a Mini without an optical drive (like the MacBook Air) and in a small form factor (Apple TV).

Will that new design work?  I think so.  It will be an annoyance and cause multiple outrages at first with people who want to have the Mini be a HTMC, but then it will start to catch on that the DVD on the computer isn't as needed as it used to be.  Apple already has the mold made up for the Apple TV form so it would keep cost down in production if they stayed with that form factor.

While I know this article started out about the Mac Mini, there is always one more option to consider.  A new consumer level desktop and the transition of the MacMini and AppleTV into one product.  If the AppleTV and MacMini were to combine into one product you would get the best of both worlds.  A low profile form factor with a computer you could actually use as your HTMC and an introductory Mac.  Hopefully this would open the doors for a new Mac desktop.  One that isn't as expensive as the Mac Pro, but is more expandable than the iMac.  Something the Macintosh community has been calling for since, well, as long as I can remember.

I guess we'll know more when September comes around.

"A nice assortment of DVDs" is probably going to have more weight and bulk than a 2.5 FireWire drive!

A mac mini with an ExpressCard slot - that would solve almost all issues with expansion.

It's too bad Apple doesn't release something that is between the iMac and the Mac Pro, or for that matter, an upgradeable Core 2 Duo/Quad machine. It'd be nice to customize them the way you could a G3, G4 or G5.

So what does that have to do with the Mac Mini? To put it simply, all of us probably have our own list of needs and wants for these machines, to which Apple has ignored for years. Granted, the bloatware that is Windows Vista makes building your own PC (Or buying one, for that matter) worth less than buying a Mac, but Apple is going to do what Apple feels it needs to do. I certainly hope Apple is not insane enough to cut out the Optical drive, but I would not be surprised if they did.

I only hope that if they do, they give the consumer a considerable discount for cutting it out - I felt the biggest thing that Macbook Air screwed up on was price. I don't want to pay more for something that lacks the features I really want in a machine, and the only thing the Air has over the other Macbooks is size.

oh, and yes, Apple ,dropped the floppy first, and in my opinion it was a bad move. Sure, I didn't really use it alot, but it give Apple that wonderful reputation of being incompatible!

In a laptop, this is alot more understandable. But not in a desktop, there is really no need. I guess you can always buy an external if you need...

How do you reinstall the OS? Until someone comes up with a more affordable more portable solution to the DVD, optical needs to remain!

The internet is great, but its not available anywhere, and without an OS, its useless.

Yes.

Get some 300+GB 2.5" EXTHD and you'll be fine... and look cool at the same time. Or get the movies streamed via Slingbox or the like.

A Mac mini w/o an optical drive is an Apple TV.

I think the idea is that if you are traveling around with a laptop, you don't want to be bringing a sleeve full of DVD's to watch. You want it streamed or downloaded to your drive.

Apple dropped the floppy before everyone else. They could be bold enough to drop the optical before everyone else.

oojacoboo: internet killed the optical drive. i don\\\\\\\'t want to pay for deprecated technology. even worse, what i they polluted it with some evil blueray that doubled the price like in the case of Ps3.

mac mini without an optical would be terrible! I do not think we are set to see a desktop without an optical. I mean, DVD's and even CD's are not that uncommon these days.

If Apple did make a mac mini without an optical, I think that would be a big mistake. A laptop a little less so. However, I still think having an optical in a laptop is nice to watch DVDs. Until laptop HD's can support the storage of alot of DVDs at full quality, I think the optical should remain in the laptop. What am I going to do if I am traveling and want to carry around a nice assortment of dvds? I gotta buy an external and load them all on there?
