Free iPod Touch Firmware 2.0

other-ipodfirmware20.pngUnless you bought an iPod touch after the 2.0 firmware release, you have an out of date iPod.  Apple is charging $10 for the firmware upgrade, but it is free to iPhone owners.  If you feel that this is wrong, you are not alone.  If you happened to purchase the iPod firmware upgrade, but want to have a security net in case something happens, don't fear.  There is a way for you to keep a backup of the firmware, and it is so easy, even Amit could do it.

Doing a simple google search for "free ipod 2.0 firmware" will get you a host of results.  You can check out the crazy guy on youtube, but it is quicker to just go to www.freeapplieipodtouch.com.  Once there, find the link to "iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw" and download it.  After downloading hook up your iPod and click on restore with option key held down.  Select your freshly downloaded restore package and let the magic begin.  The download is about 222 MB so make sure you have a fast connection.  Also make sure you have a upgraded to iTunes v7.7 before doing this.  Windows users will have to hold down "shift" as they don't have an option ... fitting, no?

MacMod is not hosting iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw and we has no affiliation with anybody hosting said file.

Name any other company that makes you pay for firmware updates?? Ive dealt with alot of other companies in the past, and this is a first for me. Granted here in "gringolandia" 10$ isnt alot, 2 gallons of gasoline, but still thats paying for an update to fix issues on a piece of equipment that we already paid 300-400 dollars for. As soon as get back to the states, this is a definate upgrade for me. Got to love corporate greed!

If you want to get the 2.0 Firmware go to a tech store (Futureshop, Walmart,Apple Store) and buy a 20 or $50 iTunes card. Then in the iTunes store on the right hand side it will say redeem. Click that and it will ask you your personal stuff. then when it comes to the credid cards press skip then enter your email and code on the back of the iTunes card and buy the upgrade.

I would pay the 10 bucks, but I don't have a credit card! Besides that, it doesn't make sense for iPhone users to get it free - that's pretty messed up.

the people that are saying that there's
a lot 10 dollars to pay for an update
or that with the money you can eat 1 week, that's kindof the dumbest thing i've ever read, first of all, it's only 10 bucks, it's not that much, and if you are that poor how you made it to afford the ipod touch, it's nonsense, if you really like the product, and of course the 2.0 firmware, support apple by buying it, and not support piracy.

Well, 10 "bucks" is a lot in other countries outside gringolandia, that's why some people wants this firmware for free... believe me, with those 10 you can eat 1 week here where I live.

C'mon Apple.... All the firmware updates for iPods have ALWAYS been free. Why charge for the firmware? They get 100 bucks a pop for registered developers for the iPhone SDK. That's just 'tarded.

Oh, come on. You're going to claim that it's wrong to try and get around it when Apple's giving it away free to iPhone users?? What makes them so different, the fact that Apple's going to get more in profit from their data features? If Apple's going to set up something to earn themselves an easy $10 bucks a pop that they're willing to give away for free to other users, then they have to expect people to find ways around it.

The guy who is talking about piracy and why the site has posted about free 2.0 ipod touch update. I suggest this guy to shutup and go to sleep. We dont want to pay 10$ for something which is supposed to be free. If you dont like that then go to apple.com and forget what you have seen here.

It's not about the cost, this is just another way of hacking/modding your iPod.

Right now it is for the 2.0 firmware, but in the future it could be used to jailbreak or mod your iPod/iPhone.

I can't believe that you are supporting a site that supports piracy. Espcially for applications that are only $10!

The site you link to has posts that show folks how to install SuperMonkeyBall for free without having to purchase the app. They claim its for backup purposes, but we all know Apple is allowing folks to "redownload" applications for free, so that claim is totally BS.

Plus, why are we even showing folks how to get the iPod Touch firmware for free? Seriously, is $10 too much money for you? How do you pay for this website if you can't afford $10 for the firmware?

I really don't understand all this piracy for software that is so inexpensive. I can understand people wanting to pirate Photoshop and Microsoft Office, but $10 applications? Wow, that's pretty low.
