A new keyboard or good prank

other-dvorakkeyboard.jpgThis could be considered a simple mod, or a really good April Fool's Day trick to play on someone.  The Dvorak simplified keyboard is a slightly altered version of the standards qwerty keyboard.  Flickr user sjwalsh384 has pictures showing how he took off the keys on his MacBook and rearranged them to the Dvorak style.  the Dvorak style of keyboard is supposed to be easier on heavy typers.  The Mac has supported the Dvorak style for years, all you have to do is go to the International preference pane and select the Dvorak style keyboard (with a DV instead of an American flag).

I plan on switching my keyboard around after seeing this and seeing how I do after a week or two.  I've been typing on a qwerty keyboard style for the past 25+ years and I don't know how easy it will be to re-learn the keys.  Expect a lot shorter articles until I get the hang of it.  Does anybody else type on a Dvorak style keypad?

I've just completed this mod on a black Apple Pro keyboard. The are similarly easy to mod because all of the affected keys are the same size & shape. I'm still getting used to it, but I'm not a great typist to begin with...

I would put a word of caution out there. The keys (at least my MacBook and probably on the new keyboards) are a double hinge system. I would highly suggest trying this on a spare keyboard before you tear apart your main keyboard. It took me about 15 minutes to fix my Q key after I took it off to move it.

I have been using dvorak for about a year now, and it is amazing. Learning it was not to hard, I didn't even rearrange the keys on my keyboard (because I have to many computers). My fingers just remember where the keys are. But it is amazing how much better on my hands and wrists the dvorak layout is. Not to mention that I can type a lot faster, I could do about 45WPM looking in qwerty, and I can touch type about 100WPM on dvorak. I say give it a shot, you will not regret it.
