More Evidence of new MacBook Pros

apple-mbp-promotion.pngThe MacBook Pro is due for an update and shopping the educational store for Apple has shows that it will probably be sooner rather than later.  It looks like Apple is trying to clear out the MacBook Pros it has on hand by offering an additional 10% discount on all standard MacBook Pros.  This is only viewable through the educational store, the regular store does not reflect this promotion.

It is also interesting that it only happens when you buy a stock MacBook Pro.  If you change the configuration (say more RAM or a larger hard drive) the promotion price goes away.  All logical thinking points to Apple wanting to clear the stock of MBP's they have on hand, so they can make room for the new stuff.

Apple has removed the promotion discount from their web page. I don't know if it was because I posted this or not.

Can you check your site nunzi and let us know if it is still discounted?

For what its worth. my university store (doit.wisc.edu)has been offering unusually deep discounts, free Apple Care on one MacBook model, $40 on an MBP, free stuff galore. Warehouse stock is down relative to in-store items, in some cases gone. Some models are by-order only, that is to say cleared out. This are one of the biggest university sellers in the country.

You have far too much time on your hands, matt. Anonymity on the internet can be a real bastard at times.

so change the topic title because the story itself is stupid. it's one thing to talk about something everyone knows (macbook line being refreshed) it's another to tell all of us in school that we can get a discount, or allege that. Just dumb.

Additional educational discounts are being offered for both the MacBook Pro and MacBooks at the UCLA bookstore. Additional discounts off the educational prices range $150 off the baseline MacBook to $500 off of a 2.5MHz MacBook Pro.

Apple regularly clears their overstock through educational institutions. Usually this is done just before a new model is released.

Man ... can't believe there are so many playa haters.

This isn't a rumor site, in case you didn't notice. If we post something that is a rumor, it is noted. I found this, and it's not a rumor, it is something that I saw first hand. Sorry you can't see it, but it is what it is.

Let me explain as best I can with what I have found so far. I came across the information by helping a college student decide on which computer to get and why a MacBook Pro is a good choice for them. They logged onto a secure educational Apple store site and we saw the discount. I saw the price, took a screen shot and mailed it to myself.

While I can't verify it, it looks like it might be because of a requirement by the institution, i.e. a notebook is a requirement so a discount is given if they buy an Apple. I tried a non-secure education site and it did not come up with the Promotional discount. Maybe it's for dedicated secure sites, or maybe it's only for a few schools or it's an unadvertised special (like the click here for the sales price you see on places like newegg or Amazon). Maybe it's for regional sales. Maybe there's a deal worked out that and I'm violating some kind of agreement. I don't know why it came up that way, but it did.

So I'll leave it up until I get a nasty email (expecting one shortly) telling me I'm in trouble. It still leads me to believe that the MacBook Pros are up for replacement.

I think the promotional discount must have been removed. Or, Chris, maybe you can see it because you are associated with an educational institution?
