The MacBook Pro is due for an update and shopping the educational store for Apple has shows that it will probably be sooner rather than later. It looks like Apple is trying to clear out the MacBook Pros it has on hand by offering an additional 10% discount on all standard MacBook Pros. This is only viewable through the educational store, the regular store does not reflect this promotion.
It is also interesting that it only happens when you buy a stock MacBook Pro. If you change the configuration (say more RAM or a larger hard drive) the promotion price goes away. All logical thinking points to Apple wanting to clear the stock of MBP's they have on hand, so they can make room for the new stuff.
