This mod was performed in 2001 by Colin and mirrored from his site (does not work). You can find more information about paint removal on his Clear G4 Mod *** MacMod Editors note: Interestingly, this mod was inspired from the iceBook and paint removal techniques that Guy Kuo pioneered in 2001 and that was posted on MacMod.com (the early days).
Notes about the modification: When you're working on the cone shaped piece, be careful to not break off the light pipes. I managed to break off the light pipe assembly - luckily, it is held into place by the rest of the base station when fully assembled. The black plastic piece is necessary for internal structural support; perhaps with a Dremel tool, one could remove some of the excess framework. I did not replace the internal bottom shield, in the hopes of providing slightly better cooling for the components. I decided to get rid of the paint on the backplate of the connectors by placing little bits of alcohol soaked cotton over the plate; however, as you can see from the pictures, I need to do this again to get the rest of the paint off. I swear that the base station has a thicker coat of paint than the Power Mac G4's side panels. There is a clear plastic sticker covering the round Apple Airport base station sticker; I thought the sticker was entirely one piece and tried to take it off but only the plastic came off. The result is that the sticker beneath is almost a totally reflective mirror. Note that the Serial number and MAC address sticker came off when soaked in the alcohol - I decided to leave mine off of the unit. On to the pictures!
