is your life boring? are you bored all the time? have you been looking for a way to make your boring existence less boring? if so, this mod guide can help you make something un-boring out of your boring, dreary existence!

tools

  • flathead screwdriver
  • small phillips screwdriver (not precision)
  • 3mm led

instructions

take the ball out of the bottom of your mouse.

using a flathead screwdriver, pry the blue plastic pieces off of the sides of your mouse as shown.

turn your mouse over and remove the two screws with your phillips screwdriver and pull the top and bottom plastic pieces apart. it will feel like you are going to break it, but just pull and the will come apart, giving you this lovely image.

now take your led and push the short pin into the plastic plug in the area of the thin plastic wire, and push the long pin into the area of the red wire. bend the led around to the other side of the logic board, plug in your mouse, and if needed adjust it until it can sit without you holding it in place. if you need to, use some electric tape to tape it in place. if you want a better effect from your mouse, solder the led to the top of the logic board and position the led so it sits above the ball. close up your mouse while its still plugged in and if the led remains lit, you can now put the screws in and put the plastic on. here is the finished product:

The LED Apple USB mouse
G'day,

To add insult to injury I have completed the led into the Apple USB mouse exercise. And hope I passed. I did this by plugging the mouse into a spare USB port on my PC so that I could test the circuit and ensure the led actually lit up (it did), and I have the pics to prove it!

These pics are on my hard drive so send me an email address and I will send them to you.

The Apple USB (puck) mouse is one of the worst innovations I have ever seen. I have always been told by Mac evangelists that Macs were always far superior to any PC. Well Ha! Now I can say to all of them...Puck off!

I fully expect that the iMac G3 Blueberry 400MHZ slot loader is much better than the supplied mouse. As it happens I am in the process of upgrading the ram and the massive 10 GB hard drive. The iMac works OK but seems slow in reacting to commands. I expect this will improve with more ram and a bigger hard drive. Are there any optical mouses that can be used in these machines?

Cheers from Gordon Curtis
