Robots and Pencils releases Jeff, a GIF creating Mac app

Robots and Pencils has released Jeff (https://robotsandpencils.com/jeff/), a Mac OS X Yosemite app that allows users to record their screen as a GIF and share it anywhere with Dropbox.

You can drag and expand Jeff to any size. After recording, the app will automatically upload a GIF to the user's Dropbox and create a link. The GIF can then be shared by pasting the link.

Jeff requires OS X Yosemite or later. It's available for US$9.99 at the Mac App Store in the Productivity category and is free for not-for-profit organizations.

OmniGraffle 6.1 adopts Yosemite's style suggestions

 The Omni Group has updated OmniGraffle (http://omnigroup.com/omnigraffle/), its software for creating graphics, to version 6.1. The upgrade improves the app's performance and adopts Mac OS X Yosemite's new style suggestions. 

Version 6.1 also improves and expands on the Inspector feature by making it completely customizable. You can switch between the sidebar, floating inspectors, and palettes—where you can snap off and combine groups to create different combinations.

Apple says it's unaware of any users affected by 'Masque...

Apple says it's unaware of any iOS users affected by the so-called "Masque Attack."

Masque Attack was discovered and described by FireEye mobile security researchers (http://tinyurl.com/l96l7yp). This attack purportedly works by luring users to install an app from a source other than the iOS App Store or their organizations’ provisioning system. In order for the attack to succeed, a user must install an untrusted app, such as one delivered through a phishing link.

Prizmo 3 gets a Yosemite-ready, revamped user interface

Creaceed (www.creaceed.com) has released Prizmo 3, an update of its Mac OS X application for scanning everything thanks to a digital camera. The upgrade adds Mac OS X Yosemite support.

The app's revamped user interface taking advantage of Yosemite's translucency and vibrancy. It supports Handoff so you can switch from editing Prizmo documents on one device to another, with Mac, iPhone, and iPad support.

StarTech announces new Thunderbolt adapters

StarTech has announced the upcoming release of two new Thunderbolt adapters, including a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 Adapter (TB2USB3GE) and a Thunderbolt to eSATA and USB 3.0 Adapter (TB2USB3ES).

The new adapters enable users to harness the speed and reliability of Thunderbolt, to add two essential connection ports to their MacBook or Thunderbolt-equipped laptop through a single host connection, says Carey Cline, senior product manager for StarTech.com. iOS users should beware a 'Masque Attack'

A malware technique labeled "Masque Attack" allows an attacker to substitute malware for a legitimate iOS app under a limited set of circumstances. It affects OS devices running iOS 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 8.0, 8.1, and 8.1.1 beta.

Masque Attack was discovered and described by FireEye mobile security researchers (http://tinyurl.com/l96l7yp). This attack works by luring users to install an app from a source other than the iOS App Store or their organizations’ provisioning system. In order for the attack to succeed, a user must install an untrusted app, such as one delivered through a phishing link.

Apple drops support for third-party SSDs in Yosemite

If you're using running a Mac that uses a third-party SSD, then upgrading to OS X Yosemite "will leave you in a world of hurt as Apple drops support for third-party SSDs," reports ZDNet (http://tinyurl.com/nrxxltm).

According to Cindori Software, makers of the popular utility Trim Enabler, the issue involves a newly introduced security feature called kext signing. A kext is an OS X kernel extension, or a driver. Enabling TRIM is one of the best ways to maximize the life of a solid-state drive, but OS X doesn't support it out-of-the-box except for Apple's own drives, but until now it has been possible to enable it by altering drivers.

Apple stock hits new high

Apple stock jumped nearly 2% to 113.45, a new high, in morning trading on the stock market today, reports Investors.com (http://tinyurl.com/qd7rnvr). In late-morning trading Thursday, Apple stock was trading just below that intraday high.

Apple analysts generally are bullish about the company's prospects for the holiday shopping season, given the company's refreshed lineup of iPhones and iPad, the article adds. This is also the first Christmas with premium headphone maker Beats Electronics under Apple ownership.

SanDisk releases flash drive for the iPhone, iPad

SanDisk Corp. has announced the iXpand Flash Drive, the company's first USB Flash Drive designed specifically for iPhone and iPad.

"According to IDC, nearly three-quarters of all images are now captured on smartphones and tablets," says Dinesh Bahal, vice president, product marketing, SanDisk. Strategy Analytics: 25% of households have Wi-Fi

Over 450 million households worldwide currently have Wi-Fi networks set up in 2014, a 5% increase from 2013 according to Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com)

ABI Research: there's a low appetite for WAN...

ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) forecasts that Bluetooth Low Energy will dominate wearable connectivity by 2015 with a 33% share of the market, as consumers struggle to justify the added tariff cost and remain happy to rely on their smartphone as the central hub.

While the wearable use case remains nascent and unproven to the average consumer, price, battery life and component size constraints affect the viability of wearable devices having a wide area network connection.

"Wearables are not about the consumption of content, because of the small size of the screens found on most devices within this category. Study: 62% of consumers are unfamiliar with smart home...

According to a new report from Parks Associates (www.parksassociates.com) approximately two-thirds of U.S. broadband households are unfamiliar with smart home products or services. Further, few consumers know what smart home devices and services are, who sells them, or where to buy them.

Parks Associates with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) analyzed the results of a Q2 2014 survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband households. Independent ad technology to reach $6 billion in 2014

The independent ad technology market is explosive, showing 52% annual growth from 2011 through 2014, with nearly a US$6 billion expected market size in 2014. In addition to revenue growth, the pace of acquisition has been frantic, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

Acquisitions from publishers reduces the independence of providers, although they continue to have public platforms. U.S. retailers anticipate 4.1% increase in total...

After a tumultuous first half of the year and unremarkable back-to-school results, U.S. retailers have emerged with an optimistic outlook for the upcoming holiday season. According to a recent BDO USA survey (http://bdo.com), chief marketing officers (CMOs) at leading U.S. retailers forecast a solid 4.1%increase in overall holiday store sales.

This year’s projection falls directly in line with the National Retail Federation’s 4.1% expected increase in holiday sales, and is a full percentage point higher than actual retail sales gains in the 2013 season. Overall, a majority (65%) of retailers believe sales will increase this year, with only 12% expecting a sales decrease. The increased optimism in growth likely points to ongoing improvements in the broader economy: housing markets are recovering, the employment picture is slowly rebounding and consumer confidence is rising, though still volatile.

Residential smart light bulb market to approach a...

The market for connected LED or “smart” light bulbs is in its embryonic stage of development, with shipments totaling fewer than 2.5 million units in 2013.

IDC: public IT cloud spending with reach $127 billion...

Public IT cloud services spending will reach US$56.6 billion in 2014 and grow to more than $127 billion in 2018, according to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (www.idc.com), which is about six times the rate of growth for the overall IT market. In 2018, public IT cloud services will account for more than half of worldwide software, server, and storage spending growth.

Among the factors driving public IT cloud services growth is the adoption of "cloud first" strategies by both IT vendors expanding their offerings and IT buyers implementing new solutions. Video delivery requires new codecs, improved network...

Standards committees and industry consortiums are working through a number of video standards to support UltraHD video as well as the next-generation of mobile video services, such as HEVC and DASH packaging, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com). 

However, some pain points remain unaddressed by the majority of vendors going in predictable directions; meanwhile, a few trailblazers are working on disruptive innovations, says the research group. Apple Pay has been available in quite a few retail stores since its release more than three weeks ago on October 20, but thus far there's been little concrete indication of its popularity with customers. A new report from The New York Times, however, sheds some light on Apple Pay's early success.

McDonald's, an early Apple Pay partner that accepts the payment system in all of its 14,000 restaurants in the United States, saw Apple Pay accounting for 50 percent of all of its tap-to-pay transactions. At Walgreens, a drugstore chain of more than 8,000 stores, Apple Pay doubled the number of mobile wallet payments being made.

Following the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus back in September, a new survey of U.S. customers by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) details the adoption rate of the first thirty days of the devices' lifespan.

The survey data, shared in a research note published today by UBS analyst Steven Milunovich, indicates that 91 percent of iPhone owners bought either an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus in the first four weeks of launch, rising from 86 percent in the first two weeks. Uptake of the new models also compares favorably to last year's iPhone launch, which saw 84 percent of customers in the first thirty days opting for the iPhone 5s and 5c.

The United States Justice Department has been using fake communications towers installed in airplanes to acquire cellular phone data for tracking down criminals, reports The Wall Street Journal. The program has reportedly been in place since 2007 and uses Cessna airplanes that operate out of "at least five" metropolitan-area airports.

Aircraft in the program out outfitted with "dirtbox" devices produced by Boeing that are designed to mimic cellular towers, fooling cellphones into reporting "unique registration information" to track down "individuals under investigation." According to the WSJ, these devices let investigators gather "identifying information and general location" data from thousands of cellular phones in one flight, and Apple's encryption policies don't prevent the collection of data.

Xcode and other tools can be used to view logs on iOS devices. One of those other tools is libimobiledevice. I usually install libimobiledevice using homebrew, as there are a few dependencies that can be a little annoying. To install homebrew if you haven’t already, run the following command:

A technique labeled “Masque Attack” allows an attacker to substitute malware for a legitimate iOS app under a limited set of circumstances.

Description

Masque Attack was discovered and described by FireEye mobile security researchers.[1] This attack works by luring users to install an app from a source other than the iOS App Store or their organizations’ provisioning system. In order for the attack to succeed, a user must install an untrusted app, such as one delivered through a phishing link.

Startup Profiles

The profiles command in Yosemite (and Mavericks for that matter), can configure profiles to install at the next boot, rather than immediately. Use the -s to define a startup profile and take note that if it fails, the profile will attempt to install at each subsequent reboot until installed. To use the command, simply add a -s then the -F for the profile and the -f to automatically confirm, as follows (and I like to throw in a -v usually for good measure):

profiles -s -F /Profiles/SuperAwesome.mobileconfig -f -v

And that’s it. Nice and easy and you now have profiles that only activate when a computer is started up.

Today marks an important milestone with the release of Office 365 sign-in for Yammer, a feature allowing users to access Yammer with their Office 365 credentials and to work across Office 365 applications with ease.

How it works

As users sign in to Yammer, they will be redirected to your organization’s Office 365 log in page. After entering their email address and password, they’ll notice the Office 365 suite navigation bar (pictured below) at the top of their Yammer network. With a single click, users can quickly toggle between Yammer, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint and more to get work done.

Later this month we will release an update to the Office 2013 Windows client applications that enables new authentication flows, including support for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). These new authentication flows are enabled by the Active Directory Authentication Library (ADAL). The update for ADAL based authentication will be disabled by default for all users of Office 2013 Windows clients, and the previous sign in authentication stack based on the Microsoft Online Sign-In Assistant will continue to be used by default. The updated authentication features will be available in private preview starting with the November 2014 update. Use libimobiledevice To View iOS Logs

Xcode and other tools can be used to view logs on iOS devices. One of those other tools is libimobiledevice. I usually install libimobiledevice using homebrew, as there are a few dependencies that can be a little annoying. To install homebrew if you haven’t already, run the following command:

ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

Once run, follow the prompts to complete the installation. Once homebrew is installed, run the following brew command to download the required components and then libimobiledevice:

Last month we focused on quality improvements for Excel Power Map, shipping more fixes than in any previous monthly release. This month we’re continuing to make fixes but we’ve also added a nice convenience feature. You can now play a tour directly from any scene, instead of always having to start playing a tour from the beginning. This is super helpful when you’re editing a tour and want to see how the changes you’ve made to a scene will appear. No more starting from the beginning and fast forwarding through to the scene you just changed. To use this feature, simply hover over a scene in the Tour Editor and click the Play button that appears. More updates coming next month. Enjoy!

A look at SkySafari for iOS, Mac OS X and 2012 DA14

This Friday, Feb. 15, a 180,000-ton asteroid with the thrilling name of "2012 DA14" will fly past the Earth. Don't worry, we're not talking a "Deep Impact" scenario. Which is good, right? And you can follow the asteroid using Apple devices.

The 50-meter space rock will come within 17,200 miles of earth -- that's closer than our orbiting geosynchronous communication satellites. Although we don't have to worry about a collision, the passage of 2012 DA14 is a record close approach to the Earth for an object of this size.

Southern Stars has released update to its SkySafari Plus and Pro apps for iOS, Mac OS X, and Android to let you track 2012 DA14. If you want to track the asteroid you'll want the updated apps. Why? Apple's Fusion Drive Apple is available as a build-to-order option for the 21.5-inch, 2.7GHz 21.5-inch iMac model. Previously, it was only offered for the high-end 21.5-inchers and the 27-inch iMac.

Apple says the Fusion Drive gives customers the performance of flash storage and the capacity of a hard drive. It combines 128GB of flash with a standard 1TB or 3TB hard drive to create a single storage volume that intelligently manages files to optimize read and write performance. A new online video (http://www.memoryminer.com) shows some of the best ways for using MemoryMiner, a digital storytelling application for Mac OS X. Designed an an complement the iLife suite, the software is all about capturing and exploring your life memories.

MemoryMiner allows anyone to zero in on the stories depicted in their photos by linking them to each other based on people, places and time. While photos are used as the starting point, the goal is always uncovering the backstory.

With MemoryMiner, you can directly record audio or video to capture the backstory of a photo. You can attach documents, web URL's, or other media to add depth and context. Each photo becomes a frame in a storyboard that can be browsed by periods in a person's life, where people overlap, by place, by time, or any combination.
