Apple says it's unaware of any users affected by 'Masque...

Apple says it's unaware of any iOS users affected by the so-called "Masque Attack."

Masque Attack was discovered and described by FireEye mobile security researchers (http://tinyurl.com/l96l7yp). This attack purportedly works by luring users to install an app from a source other than the iOS App Store or their organizations’ provisioning system. In order for the attack to succeed, a user must install an untrusted app, such as one delivered through a phishing link.

In a statement to iMore (http://tinyurl.com/pyz6ccg) Apple says: "We designed OS X and iOS with built-in security safeguards to help protect customers and warn them before installing potentially malicious software. We're not aware of any customers that have actually been affected by this attack. We encourage customers to only download from trusted sources...

iOS users should beware a 'Masque Attack'

A malware technique labeled "Masque Attack" allows an attacker to substitute malware for a legitimate iOS app under a limited set of circumstances. It affects OS devices running iOS 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 8.0, 8.1, and 8.1.1 beta.

Masque Attack was discovered and described by FireEye mobile security researchers (http://tinyurl.com/l96l7yp). This attack works by luring users to install an app from a source other than the iOS App Store or their organizations’ provisioning system. In order for the attack to succeed, a user must install an untrusted app, such as one delivered through a phishing link.

This technique takes advantage of a security weakness that allows an untrusted app—with the same "bundle identifier" as that of a legitimate app—to replace the legitimate app on an affected device, while keeping all of the user’s data. This vulnerability exists because iOS does not enforce matching...

Apple drops support for third-party SSDs in Yosemite

If you're using running a Mac that uses a third-party SSD, then upgrading to OS X Yosemite "will leave you in a world of hurt as Apple drops support for third-party SSDs," reports ZDNet (http://tinyurl.com/nrxxltm).

According to Cindori Software, makers of the popular utility Trim Enabler, the issue involves a newly introduced security feature called kext signing. A kext is an OS X kernel extension, or a driver. Enabling TRIM is one of the best ways to maximize the life of a solid-state drive, but OS X doesn't support it out-of-the-box except for Apple's own drives, but until now it has been possible to enable it by altering drivers.

"Kext signing basically works by checking if all the drivers in the system are unaltered by a third party, or approved by Apple," Cindori Software writes (http://tinyurl.com/ojmjmc4) on...

Strategy Analytics: 25% of households have Wi-Fi

Over 450 million households worldwide currently have Wi-Fi networks set up in 2014, a 5% increase from 2013 according to Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com)

"Contrary to common perception, not all consumers have embraced Wi-Fi networks in their homes despite the fact that global connected devices per household stand at 5.5 in 2014 – Wi-Fi router adoption in fixed-line broadband households still has much room to grow globally," says analyst Eric Smith. "As Wi-Fi technologies continue to advance, prices fall, and the technology becomes more familiar to the average consumer, nearly 80% of fixed-line broadband households will have established Wi-Fi networks by 2018."

Jason Blackwell, director of Service Provider Strategies at Strategy Analytics, adds: "Broadband penetration in developed markets is reaching saturation point and emerging markets face infrastructure costs in expanding...

ABI Research: there's a low appetite for WAN...

ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com) forecasts that Bluetooth Low Energy will dominate wearable connectivity by 2015 with a 33% share of the market, as consumers struggle to justify the added tariff cost and remain happy to rely on their smartphone as the central hub.

While the wearable use case remains nascent and unproven to the average consumer, price, battery life and component size constraints affect the viability of wearable devices having a wide area network connection.

"Wearables are not about the consumption of content, because of the small size of the screens found on most devices within this category. Wearables are about the quantified self, more than likely, communicated via Bluetooth to a smartphone to view the results and then possibly from there to a cloud-based service for aggregation and further analysis," says Nick Spencer, senior practice director, Mobile Devices at ABI Research....

According to a new report from Parks Associates (www.parksassociates.com) approximately two-thirds of U.S. broadband households are unfamiliar with smart home products or services. Further, few consumers know what smart home devices and services are, who sells them, or where to buy them.

The results include recommendations for the connected home industry, analysis of consumer demand for smart home products, and strategies to raise awareness of smart home devices and their sales channels.

"Today, smart home service providers control almost every aspect of their offerings while consumers make only one choice - the service provider," says Tricia Parks, CEO and Founder, Parks Associates. "Deploying open solutions that give consumers a degree of control...

Independent ad technology to reach $6 billion in 2014

The independent ad technology market is explosive, showing 52% annual growth from 2011 through 2014, with nearly a US$6 billion expected market size in 2014. In addition to revenue growth, the pace of acquisition has been frantic, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

Acquisitions from publishers reduces the independence of providers, although they continue to have public platforms. Some of the major recent publisher-acquisitions have included Facebook (LiveRail), Twitter (MoPub), Yahoo (Flurry), AOL (Adap.tv) and Comcast (FreeWheel), with strong focus on bringing ad technology in-house.

In addition, consolidation among independents, such as Ooyala’s just announced acquisition of Videoplaza continues to change the landscape. Adobe and Criteo lead this space, with 17% and 15% market share, respectively. Adobe’s advertising business was built from the Omniture acquisition, with additional...

U.S. retailers anticipate 4.1% increase in total...

After a tumultuous first half of the year and unremarkable back-to-school results, U.S. retailers have emerged with an optimistic outlook for the upcoming holiday season. According to a recent BDO USA survey (http://bdo.com), chief marketing officers (CMOs) at leading U.S. retailers forecast a solid 4.1%increase in overall holiday store sales.

This year’s projection falls directly in line with the National Retail Federation’s 4.1% expected increase in holiday sales, and is a full percentage point higher than actual retail sales gains in the 2013 season. Overall, a majority (65%) of retailers believe sales will increase this year, with only 12% expecting a sales decrease. The increased optimism in growth likely points to ongoing improvements in the broader economy: housing markets are recovering, the employment picture is slowly rebounding and consumer confidence is rising, though still volatile.

The market for connected LED or “smart” light bulbs is in its embryonic stage of development, with shipments totaling fewer than 2.5 million units in 2013.

However, falling LED prices and the endorsement of ZigBee Light Link as the preferred connectivity solution by a number of leading lighting manufacturers means that annual smart bulb shipments are set to increase to 223 million by 2020, achieving a total installed base of over 400 million, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

IDC: public IT cloud spending with reach $127 billion...

Public IT cloud services spending will reach US$56.6 billion in 2014 and grow to more than $127 billion in 2018, according to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (www.idc.com), which is about six times the rate of growth for the overall IT market. In 2018, public IT cloud services will account for more than half of worldwide software, server, and storage spending growth.

Among the factors driving public IT cloud services growth is the adoption of "cloud first" strategies by both IT vendors expanding their offerings and IT buyers implementing new solutions. More importantly, IDC believes the cloud services market is now entering an "innovation stage" that will produce an explosion of new solutions and value creation on top of the cloud.

Many of these new solutions will be in industry-focused platforms with their own innovation communities, which will reshape not only how companies operate their IT,...

Standards committees and industry consortiums are working through a number of video standards to support UltraHD video as well as the next-generation of mobile video services, such as HEVC and DASH packaging, according to ABI Research (www.abiresearch.com).

However, some pain points remain unaddressed by the majority of vendors going in predictable directions; meanwhile, a few trailblazers are working on disruptive innovations, says the research group. Areas such as the inability of TCP delivery to keep up with high throughput demands, the lack of perceptual tools in modern codecs, as well as the inefficiency of storage within CDNs all pose significant additional challenges within the ecosystem.  A number of innovative companies, from startups to more mature businesses, are addressing these issues: bitmovin, beamr, Akamai, Aspera (part of IBM), Vantrix, and Conviva.

Iger recalled the time when he contacted his buddy Jobs with what he thought was a novel idea: to unleash movies/TV shows like iTunes did for music. Of course, being the visionary he was, Jobs had already thought of this and even brought an early version of the iPod with video to the meeting. And of course, being the businessman he was, Jobs then asked Iger if he would commit Disney content to the project.

Underoos! Now in Adult Sizes!

As a child of the 70's and 80's, I have a soft spot in my heart for Underoos, the fantastic underwear that looked like actual outfits for Supergirl or Wonder Woman or other characters. It was a tragedy when they disappeared. Luckily, not only are Underoos back, but they are back in adult sizes! Exclusively available at Hot Topic, there are eight varieties at the moment: Batman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Captain America, He-Man, Skeletor, Superman, and Wonder Woman. This is one of those times when you may actually have to brave the mall, they appear to be entirely sold out online and it seems the sold-out ones vanish from the Hot Topic site. While it's fantastic they exist, you may find it difficult to get your hands on them, at least for now. But now you know, and as another 80's favorite explained to me, knowing is half the battleâ

Chris Bank does a great job of tackling UX and UI in this post.

When designing a website, you want your UX to be as positive as possible — you want your users to enjoy being on your website, that’s kind of the whole point. But you can’t just say “let’s improve our site’s UX” any more than a business can say “let’s make more money.” It’s the strategies you use to create your UX, namely the UI, that can enhance (or weaken) it.

Skype on Friday announced Skype for Web, a new version of its VoIP service that can be used in a browser rather than through the dedicated application. "Perhaps you're sitting at a computer that doesn't already have Skype downloaded," explained Jonathan Watson, a senior product marketing manager with Skype. "Or maybe you're on the go and using an Internet cafe or hotel computer where you can't download Skype at all. Using Skype for Web makes it more convenient to get to your conversations."

Knowledge vs. Intelligence

Anthony Colangelo:

The difference between knowledge and intelligence is key here. Knowledge is the collection of skills and information a person has acquired through experience. Intelligence is the ability to apply knowledge. Just because someone lacks knowledge of a particular subject doesn’t mean they can’t apply their intelligence to help solve problems.

I love that.

Apple Pay Doubled Mobile Wallet Transactions at Walgreens,...

Apple Pay has been available in quite a few retail stores since its release more than three weeks ago on October 20, but thus far there's been little concrete indication of its popularity with customers. A new report from The New York Times, however, sheds some light on Apple Pay's early success.

McDonald's, an early Apple Pay partner that accepts the payment system in all of its 14,000 restaurants in the United States, saw Apple Pay accounting for 50 percent of all of its tap-to-pay transactions. At Walgreens, a drugstore chain of more than 8,000 stores, Apple Pay doubled the number of mobile wallet payments being made.

As shared earlier this month, Whole Foods processed 150,000 Apple Pay transactions between October 20 and November 6, which equated...

In late October, researchers discovered that AT&T and Verizon had been engaging in some unsavory customer tracking methods, using unique identifying numbers or "perma-cookies" to track the websites that customers visited on their cellular devices to deliver target advertisements.

Following significant negative attention from the media, AT&T today told the Associated Press that it is no longer injecting the hidden web tracking codes into the data sent from its customers' devices. The change by AT&T essentially removes a hidden string of letters and numbers that are passed along to websites that a consumer visits. It can be used to track subscribers across the Internet, a lucrative data-mining opportunity for advertisers that could still reveal users...

Following the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus back in September, a new survey of U.S. customers by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) details the adoption rate of the first thirty days of the devices' lifespan.

The survey data, shared in a research note published today by UBS analyst Steven Milunovich, indicates that 91 percent of iPhone owners bought either an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus in the first four weeks of launch, rising from 86 percent in the first two weeks. Uptake of the new models also compares favorably to last year's iPhone launch, which saw 84 percent of customers in the first thirty days opting for the iPhone 5s and 5c.

Most of the increase in share for the new models since the initial launch period has come from the iPhone 6, which saw an increase of six percentage points to 68 percent, while the iPhone 6 Plus remains at around 23-24 percent of purchases, despite...

We reported in late September that the iPhone 6 was only given the green light to be sold in China after rigorous regulatory scrutiny which led Apple to reassure the Chinese government that their new smartphones didn't have security "backdoors" through which U.S. agencies could access users' data. Just when you thought that the U.S. Government learned its lesson about spying on their people and foreigners around the world, a new report opens that old wound. We briefly noted in a 2012 report that a new BBC Interview with Ex-Apple Executive Tony Fadell revealed a very bitter man who was pleased to see Scott Forstall, Former VP of iOS Software, "get what he deserved." Considering that Forstall was legally unable to defend himself at that point in time, the remarks by Fadell seemed to be a cheap shot. Obviously Steve Jobs didn't have a problem with Fadell's leaving the company. And now a new report shows that Mr. Humble Pie is really a tyrant as much or worse than Scott Forstall ever was, if you believe the feedback of his own employees that is.

The United States Justice Department has been using fake communications towers installed in airplanes to acquire cellular phone data for tracking down criminals, reports The Wall Street Journal. The program has reportedly been in place since 2007 and uses Cessna airplanes that operate out of "at least five" metropolitan-area airports.

Aircraft in the program out outfitted with "dirtbox" devices produced by Boeing that are designed to mimic cellular towers, fooling cellphones into reporting "unique registration information" to track down "individuals under investigation." According to the WSJ, these devices let investigators gather "identifying information and general location" data from thousands of cellular phones in one flight, and Apple's encryption policies don't prevent the collection of data.

Matt Swann is a principal software engineer for Office 365 and Vijay Kumar is a senior product manager for Office 365.

In our last post, From Inside the Cloud: What does Microsoft do to prepare for emerging security threats to Office 365?, we looked at the Red team’s activities and what goes into our “Assume Breach” approach for preparing for emerging security threats to Office 365.

The rigor and discipline required to testing ourselves continuously to keep your data safe within the service, is by nature an operation of tremendous scale especially when you consider the terabytes (TB) of data flowing daily through the service.

And it’s the Blue team’s job, to literally find that potential needle in the haystack of activity that may signify anomalous behavior and to then take action. Which is what we explain this week’s episode of From Inside the Cloud.

To achieve this...

TA14-317A: Apple iOS "Masque Attack"...

Original release date: November 13, 2014
Systems Affected

iOS devices running iOS 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 8.0, 8.1, and 8.1.1 beta.

Overview

A technique labeled “Masque Attack” allows an attacker to substitute malware for a legitimate iOS app under a limited set of circumstances.

Description

Masque Attack was discovered and described by FireEye mobile security researchers.[1] This attack works by luring users to install an app from a source other than the iOS App Store or their organizations’ provisioning system. In order for the attack to succeed, a user must install an untrusted app, such as one delivered through a phishing link.

This technique takes advantage of a security weakness that allows an untrusted app—with the same “bundle identifier” as that of a legitimate app—to replace the legitimate app on an...

Startup Profiles

The profiles command in Yosemite (and Mavericks for that matter), can configure profiles to install at the next boot, rather than immediately. Use the -s to define a startup profile and take note that if it fails, the profile will attempt to install at each subsequent reboot until installed. To use the command, simply add a -s then the -F for the profile and the -f to automatically confirm, as follows (and I like to throw in a -v usually for good measure):

profiles -s -F /Profiles/SuperAwesome.mobileconfig -f -v

And that’s it. Nice and easy and you now have profiles that only activate when a computer is started up.

Today marks an important milestone with the release of Office 365 sign-in for Yammer, a feature allowing users to access Yammer with their Office 365 credentials and to work across Office 365 applications with ease.

How it works

As users sign in to Yammer, they will be redirected to your organization’s Office 365 log in page. After entering their email address and password, they’ll notice the Office 365 suite navigation bar (pictured below) at the top of their Yammer network. With a single click, users can quickly toggle between Yammer, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint and more to get work done.

This feature gives users one less password to manage and a seamless online entry point to all Office 365 apps.

Garage Series: Power BI and Excel takes on El Clásico

This week the Garage Series comes from Barcelona, Spain on the heels of TechEd Europe. In this demo-packed show Jeremy puts the advanced analytics and visuals in Excel and Power BI to the test to expose data patterns within past matches between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Last November we invited Michael Tejedor to the Garage to give a first look at Power BI. This week, we hit the road again and while at TechEd Barcelona, and we decided to put Power BI to the test and see if we could combine multiple data sources and use the visualization engines in Excel and Power BI in an attempt to predict the outcome of El Clásico after hearing from fans of both clubs.  The nice thing with a scenario like this is that detailed...

Continuous Innovation Makes Office 365 the Clear...

The technology industry runs on innovation: new products, new features, and new ideas. Innovation is the arena in which technology companies compete in their never-ending quest to offer products and services that are better, faster, and more secure.

Our commitment to innovation and delighting customers has been a hallmark of Microsoft Office since we introduced the very first version of the productivity suite. Since then, our non-stop innovation has enabled us to far outpace competitors such as Google, who suggests their Google Apps for Work are “good enough for most people,” including those who rely on the rich, full-featured experience of Office 365 (Could that be one reason why the annual Thomson Reuters “Top 100 Innovators” study recognized Microsoft as a leading Software innovator again this year while Google was recognized only for Search?).

Over the past year, Microsoft developers and engineers have introduced a...

Some people say that Microsoft Project cannot be used outside of a Waterfall schedule approach.  This is absolutely NOT true.  In fact, most of the best scheduling approaches leverage iterative activities, such as Scrum or Agile Planning incorporated into their project.

This seminar will address key steps, for building an Agile schedule, addressing pros and cons to Scrum features and approaches, while blending a schedule to address the tactical agile needs, while still providing rollup and time boxed reporting to stakeholders.

This lively and example-driven webinar should help all who attend understand how they too can build agile, iterative schedules and address the need for having a good schedule that also helps to map, track and report activities, features, story points, backlogs all within Project.

10 Reasons Uber Kicks Ass

I’ve spent way too much time traveling in my life (and way too little time writing about non-technical things). It’s had ups and it’s had downs. But these days, a bunch of fun little technical breakthroughs that make traveling incrementally better. And one of those things is Uber (and other similar services) who have disrupted the short-range ground transportation game. And I like them so much, I decided to write a little list of the reasons why! While writing, I also realized that you can use this code and we both get Uber credit I never used a promo code. But you can: https://www.uber.com/invite/uberkrypted. Has nothing to do with why I wrote this, but it’s a nice thing for me to find while writing…

So here’s my top 10 reason Uber rocks:

  1. I believe in the model. People work when they want and seem generally happy. I’ve had a lot of students and people who...

Use libimobiledevice To View iOS Logs

Xcode and other tools can be used to view logs on iOS devices. One of those other tools is libimobiledevice. I usually install libimobiledevice using homebrew, as there are a few dependencies that can be a little annoying. To install homebrew if you haven’t already, run the following command:

ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

Once run, follow the prompts to complete the installation. Once homebrew is installed, run the following brew command to download the required components and then libimobiledevice:

brew install -v --devel --fresh automake autoconf libtool wget libimobiledevice

Then run ideviceinstaller:

brew install -v --HEAD --fresh --build-from-source ideviceinstaller

Once these are...

Notice: Mac OS X Hints is now a read-only site

We respect its storied history, and value the contributions of its many readers, but we can no longer support it at the level it deserves. There’s a wealth of great information here that many will find useful, so we've elected to maintain it in a read-only form. Thanks for your many years of attention and everything you've done to make the site such a valuable resource.

From Inside the Cloud—How do we monitor and...

Excel Power Map—November update for Office 365

Last month we focused on quality improvements for Excel Power Map, shipping more fixes than in any previous monthly release. This month we’re continuing to make fixes but we’ve also added a nice convenience feature. You can now play a tour directly from any scene, instead of always having to start playing a tour from the beginning. This is super helpful when you’re editing a tour and want to see how the changes you’ve made to a scene will appear. No more starting from the beginning and fast forwarding through to the scene you just changed. To use this feature, simply hover over a scene in the Tour Editor and click the Play button that appears. More updates coming next month. Enjoy!

Power Map is part of several analytics and...

Use your Office 365 credentials to sign in to Yammer

Today’s post was written by Jay Sethna, product marketing manager for the Yammer team.

Office 365 suite navigation bar and...

By combining historical El Clásico and player data, outside forces like temperature, humidity and moon phases, Jeremy tries to predict the outcomes and puts these predictions to the test among fans in Barcelona.

Project webcast November 18—Leveraging Scrum/Agile...

Presented by Tim Runcie of Advisicon.

Office 2013 updated authentication enabling Multi-...

Later this month we will release an update to the Office 2013 Windows client applications that enables new authentication flows, including support for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). These new authentication flows are enabled by the Active Directory Authentication Library (ADAL). The update for ADAL based authentication will be disabled by default for all users of Office 2013 Windows clients, and the previous sign in authentication stack based on the Microsoft Online Sign-In Assistant will continue to be used by default. The updated authentication features will be available in private preview starting with the November 2014 update. This blog post talks about the new features that are enabled by the ADAL sign-in authentication stack and when you should consider enabling that stack.

Video showcases iOS app built with Xojo

Xojo Inc., the company formerly known as Real Software, has posted a video of an iOS app that was built with Xojo. Xojo is an object-oriented, cross-platform software development tool that enables developers to create software for OS X, Windows, Linux, the web and mobile.

The video showcases all the native controls and gives an overview of Xojo's support for building iOS apps. Building native iOS apps with Xojo is the same as building a web or desktop app as you do today. You can view the video at http://tinyurl.com/nvexpk7 .

Developers can use the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of Xojo for free, and will only need to purchase a license once they want to build a distributable version of their application. Licenses are purchased per target platform, including Web, Desktop, Database, Console, and Xojo Pro, which is a bundle license that includes all deployment licenses plus an added...

A look at SkySafari for iOS, Mac OS X and 2012 DA14

This Friday, Feb. 15, a 180,000-ton asteroid with the thrilling name of "2012 DA14" will fly past the Earth. Don't worry, we're not talking a "Deep Impact" scenario. Which is good, right? And you can follow the asteroid using Apple devices.

The 50-meter space rock will come within 17,200 miles of earth -- that's closer than our orbiting geosynchronous communication satellites. Although we don't have to worry about a collision, the passage of 2012 DA14 is a record close approach to the Earth for an object of this size.

Southern Stars has released update to its SkySafari Plus and Pro apps for iOS, Mac OS X, and Android to let you track 2012 DA14. If you want to track the asteroid you'll want the updated apps. Why? Because the Earth's gravity affects the asteroid's orbit so severely, most desktop planetarium programs -- and all other mobile apps -- will completely fail to predict the asteroid's position correctly, says Southern Stars founder Tim DeBenedictis.
