This mod will show you the expert or n00b how to light up your Apple USB mouse with 2 5v 20mA LEDs.
(not Apple's pro mouse though)
Dual LED Apple USB mouse
This is for entertainment ONLY! If you injure yourself or damage your hardware you can NOT hold me responsible. Also, if you do not know how to solder and you are unwilling to use google, don't ask me because I will not tell you how to solder. Also, soldering is something you get better at with experience so don't feel too bad if you screw up.
You will NEED the following:
1 Apple USB mouse.
2 5v 20mA(max) LEDs (any colour) integrated resistor optional, part #276-208 from "The Source" aka Radio Shaft.
1 4 inch piece of wire (more is better).
1 soldering iron with a really small tip and a small spool of solder.
1 sharp pocket knife/scissors.
1 pair of wire strippers.
1 pair of tweezers.
1 small philips screwdriver.
**NOTE** You do not need a resistor for this mod!
First, UNPLUG THE MOUSE! then flip it upside down with the cable facing away from you. Remove the ball by twisting the round piece with the "funky" and or "trippy" sticker on it counter-clockwise. Now, pry up the coloured side plastic piece by wedging your fingernail under the end of the side of it and pushing forward, when it pops out do the same for the back then pull the piece off from the side.
Undo the screws on each side.
Once the screws have been removed, flip the mouse over, put your thumb in the ball compartment and pull back then up on the top half. You end up with this.
Pin 1 is positive (+) and pin 4 is negative (-), as you can see I have already had some "fun" with this mouse.
Get out your 5v LEDs, the long lead (wire/pin) is positive and the short lead is negative. Your LEDs MUST be wired like mine are in the picture below! When you are bending the leads you MUST be careful as they are very easy to break!. When you are cutting the wire, cut it a little bit longer than you need it incase you screw up.
Once you have your wire stripped and laid out plug in and or turn on you soldering iron. when your soldering iron has heated to an adequate temperature (it melts the solder on contact) get your spool of solder and begin soldering. When you are done your mouse should look like this.
Before you put the mouse back together check for any solder that has flowed onto the circuit board or other pins, when you are sure that everything is ok plug the mouse into a booted Mac. The LEDs should light up immediately, if they do unplug the mouse and put it back together. Remember to put the coloured side pieces on the right way around!
