Quicksilver Air Redirection

After overcolcking my QS 733 to 800Mhz I decided to add a bit of extra cooling efficiency to make sure everything stays cool.

First I removed the Harddrives below the 120mm extraction fan and then the fan itself.  I was quite surprised to find that behind the fan was a large grill which seemed only to force air into the outer plastic cover serving no purpose IMHO.  So I decided to cover this grilled section and so forcing the air out of the case.

After removing the fan Shroud from the case I noticed that the two sides that attach to the case touch in the corner, so I filed out the corner creating about a .5mm gap so as to stop any potential vibration.

here are the vents (circled in red)

After finding a suitable cover (some .5mm ABS plastic) I measured and cut it to shape to cover all the holes in the area.  I then put some double sided tape around the edges and measured where the fan shroud screws would need to be and drilled them out larger to account for incorrect measuring.

here is the cover from the back after it was taped.

I then installed the cover and checked the fan shroud would fit back correctly. I also found that it tended to flap a little in the middle so I peeled it half off and installed another piece of Double Sided tape in the centre and stuck it back down.

Here is the cover installed.

I then noticed that the air passed through a metal grill then the plastic case on its way out of the case (this may have been a cause of some noise/turbulence) so  I decided to cut out the metal grill too.

In order  to gain easy access to  the grill i removed the rear panel  by taking off the handles and the 3  screws that attach to the PS through the rear cover.  After that the cover just clipped off exposing the metal grill.

Here is a pic of the screws to remove (follow the arrows!) and the hole cut out.

After cutting the hole out with tin snips I Broke off most of the points with a pair of pliers by bending them back and forth a few times.

NOTE: do not break off the point where the red arrow is as this is a point for the plastic cover to clip on.

I also cut out the fan grill on the PS as it was right there and everyone recommends this too.

here is a pic after cleaning it up.

All up this took about 2-3 hours (I like to take my time).

Anyway after re assembly the Air literally pours out of the rear of the case and it only ever seems to get just warm even under heavy load.

hmm still a bit noisy so I will probably swap the fans out for some quieter ones shortly.

Hope this gives some ideas to others

Regards
